JST,

Correct. Diesel engines complete with their emissions control technology enforced my European Union regulatory controls have put the modern diesel engine under a lot of stress. 1800 bar injection pressures correspond to
26100 psi.

Unless sustained reliability can be ensured from the gamut of emission control devices and supporting systems - EGR's, Dual mass flywheels, fuel injection equipment, engine component robustness, diesel particulate filters - the diesel engine with its initial higher purchase price will cease production for lighter duties. The cost of diesel fuel alone in the UK is having that effect independently.

Fuel costs in the UK.

Diesel Per Litre: £1.439

Diesel equivalent per US gallon £5.409 ($8.621)

Petrol/Gas' per litre £1.369

Petrol/Gas' equivalent per US gallon £5.18 ($8.259)

Kind regards Toadshall

Welcome to the era of the loopy pursuit of lower emissions figures for new cars regardless of the consequences and subsequent energy costs.

I have been fettling my Series One to put it back on the road....setting tappets, gapping points & plugs, timing an engine and turning it over with a starter handle now seem dark arts of a lost world Smile ....but the old petrol Series One is now starting to make economic sense for a local run about. No depreciation (it's value has doubled in the time I have had it), no road tax, insurance £95 fully comp, no MOT (as from 18th this month), parts still pretty much available and easy to work on yourself.......oh and a whole bag of fun to drive! Very Happy It's "cradle to grave" overall energy costs make it look quite good as well. John

John,

Your series 1 is a great project and I would be more than contented myself if it were mine! I drove to Tunisia in a series 3 in the 1980's with masses of equipment above and behind for my company ICI Agrochemicals. A bit hard on the rear for such a substantial journey.

My own project is the superficial repair, service and paint of a Honda ATV 4 x 4 which was given to me by a neighbour after I helped him with a number of his own minor projects this year. it tows my trailer, and is great for moving timber I have split to my log store to offload. I haul about 3 tons each year. I also use it for collecting the leaves in my garden - about a ton. It all helps to keep me trim. My woodburner attracts the familys female bottoms each winter, particularly my two daughters!

Regards Toadshall
