My 2007 Freelander 2 HSE has been diagnosed with a shattered piston at 110000 miles and is out of warranty. Does anyone know if this is economically repairable or is it a case of a replacement engine?

Hi, with 110000 miles on the clock I would be inclind to fit a second hand unit with lower miles on it. Ive seen one or two for sale on ebay.
You could be looking at arround £700 mark.
It depends on the damage done to the engine. Damage can range from bent valves to a failed crankshaft.
A strip down would need to be carried out, its possible you might get away with an engine rebore with new oversized pistons,rings etc.however this would be the best you could hope for and would still cost you arround £1500 at the very least depending on where hou go. Non landrover.
Other things to consider after any rebuild would be the warranty period.
Me personaly would be to go for a replacment engine.
Your options would a new engine" most expensive option ". A recon unit which would be an exchange for your old one or the cheapest one a second hand unit from salvage and you arrange some one to fit for you this is what i would do and have done the past with no problems
