vibration during idle in "D" gear

That goes for auto cars, when in "D" gear but with the food at the
stop pedal, the front of the car goes wild, As soon as a move to the "N" everything calms down.
Any one experienced that?

Strange part is that the revs are the same whatever the gear, and they are steady

Hi vafree2, I have noticed exactly the same with a test drive car. When in D, a 1st or 2nd gear is pre-engaged so there is some load on the engine and this causes the vibration. It seemed strange to me too. Don't know if it's normal behaviour. Could it be the fuel quality? I hope our forum friends can give us their observations from their cars. The behaviour vafree2 describes only happens when in D, stationary with engine running in idle. As soon as you start moving and revs begin to rise the vibration stops. Btw vafree2, have you tried Yamaha-Fan's recomendations (2-T oil)? This should smooth things up a bit.

Hi Vafree2,
I have a TD4 Auto and DO NOT have any vibration like you describe with the gearbox engaged in D, foot on the brake whilst engine is idling.
Therefore, I think you can safely assume that something is wrong and you should let your dealer look at your car asap. Shocked Shocked

Vafree2, 2-T oil will not help in your case, as I do not believe that the reason of your vibration may be second grade fuel.
I do believe and conclude from the technical explanation I have received from a technical expert in a past court case for similar problems that the reason for your vibration of the automatic in D-position may be the dilution of the automatic transmission oil.
Landrover buys the automatic boxes from ZF (Germany) and Aisin (Japan), both very reputed gear box manufacturers. The automatic boxes have to be cleaned very carefully prior to filling with auto trans oil (ATF).
If such oil gets dirty due to tiny metal parts or even i. e. gear box conservation oil, it will form "bubbles" in the ATF with the result that the transmission blades "assume" wanted torque, which leads to the vibration.
I would see your dealer and let them change the ATF (automatic transmission oil) first. This is the cheapest cure and it should solve your problem. But your service shop must apply hospital cleanliness to avoid similar problems. And let them change the ATF filter to be on the sure side.

This is my personal opinion and and it may not cure your problem, if the vibration has technical or other reasons.
But I would try this way.

YF

Come on guys, we need a bit more input over here....
I'm just about to order a Diesel Auto (as a part exchange for my i6) and would also like to know if ANY of you with an auto have observed those vibrations when not moving with gearbox in D. Come on let us see some posts. Bow down Thumbs Up ...even if you don't have the problem let us know.
Thanks

You can certainly tell the difference when you move into N.
I think it is just the engine straining ever so slightly against the brake.
The engine seems to quieten down when moved out of D.
I'd say its no different to any other Auto I've driven. A vibration yes, but only slight. TD4 HSE Auto Caspian Blue

There is certainly a vibration noticable in my car. When stationary in D if you look at the back edge of the bonnet it vibrates, knock it out of D into N and it stops. The vibration is slight and I have not considered this a problem. I will add it to my list now though. Looks like it may be just the diesels rattling away at a particular frequency when the engine is under load at idle.

elephant this is exactly what I noticed as well. I visited the dealer and they claim this is normal behaviour. He did not give me a satisfactory answer though, to the question why this was not observed when the car was brand new.
He mentioned something about stip engine , my quess is that he was bu...ing me.

Vibes when stationary - smooth as silk in N and none in D. Done 8.5k (with new charge of engine oil @ 5.5k).

Hi Carlfraz - I have been keeping up with the forum just alot of work and being tethered to Mrs elephant keeps me away. I've done 6800 miles now and the vibration has always been there. I can't feel anything I can just see the bonnet vibrating a little - its not enough to excite Mrs e either! Next time I'm at the lights I'll try revving the engine a little to see this changes anything.

vafree2 - It is noticable but I have never been concerned about it and not conscious of any problem - until you mentioned it that is!
