Home > Technical > vibration during idle in "D" gear |

Hi vafree2, I have noticed exactly the same with a test drive car. When in D, a 1st or 2nd gear is pre-engaged so there is some load on the engine and this causes the vibration. It seemed strange to me too. Don't know if it's normal behaviour. Could it be the fuel quality? I hope our forum friends can give us their observations from their cars. The behaviour vafree2 describes only happens when in D, stationary with engine running in idle. As soon as you start moving and revs begin to rise the vibration stops. Btw vafree2, have you tried Yamaha-Fan's recomendations (2-T oil)? This should smooth things up a bit. |

Vafree2, 2-T oil will not help in your case, as I do not believe that the reason of your vibration may be second grade fuel.

You can certainly tell the difference when you move into N.

There is certainly a vibration noticable in my car. When stationary in D if you look at the back edge of the bonnet it vibrates, knock it out of D into N and it stops. The vibration is slight and I have not considered this a problem. I will add it to my list now though. Looks like it may be just the diesels rattling away at a particular frequency when the engine is under load at idle. |

elephant this is exactly what I noticed as well. I visited the dealer and they claim this is normal behaviour. He did not give me a satisfactory answer though, to the question why this was not observed when the car was brand new.

Vibes when stationary - smooth as silk in N and none in D. Done 8.5k (with new charge of engine oil @ 5.5k). |

Hi Carlfraz - I have been keeping up with the forum just alot of work and being tethered to Mrs elephant keeps me away. I've done 6800 miles now and the vibration has always been there. I can't feel anything I can just see the bonnet vibrating a little - its not enough to excite Mrs e either! Next time I'm at the lights I'll try revving the engine a little to see this changes anything.
