By the sudden torsional forces when a gear is re-engaged causing buckling of the straps. More of a probelm with cars without DMF but also bump starting has the same effect. When I used to asses clutch damage for warrantys 90 % of the time I could prove a car had been suffering with starting issues and had been bumped or tow started !!

There was very little wear on the friction plate and little in the way of dust which could have contributed to any problem.
There was no indication of damage or abuse on any of the parts and as I understand it the tension problem with the springs/fingers on the pressure plate were irregular with some being weaker than others.
I have had the car from new and I have never had any cause to bump or tow start it and do not coast in neutral or with the clutch depressed.
The dealer is of the opinion that the seat of the problem was one or several of the following - faulty pressure plate springs - flywheel dimensions out of spec - sticking thrust bearing or some other intermittent mechanical problem.

Clutch Judder

I have just started experiencing a small judder through the clutch pedal on a slight incline when changing from second to third. Only seems to happen during the initial 3/4 mile from cold start. Do you think that is a sign of clutch wear or could there be another explanation? I've read condensation can cause slippage on a cold clutch??? but I am unsure if that is me clinging on to the vain hope I haven't got a £1k bill heading my way!!! I haven't got any of the other symptoms of a failing clutch and it still pulls well in higher gears. It's done about 40k miles so not too bad compared to other clutch victims on the forum.

Judder while going up from 2nd to 3rd was present on my car starting from 14 Tkm on the clock. Like you thought that it would go away. It didn't. Later on slipping clutch in higher gears appearad as well. Changed clutch on 34 Tkm. Warranty claim rejected by JLR Censored

Hi. Many thanks for confirming my suspicions. Sorry to hear you had the same problem. I can't believe they didn't pay out under warranty at such a low mileage. How you could argue normal wear is beyond me. Mine is 5 years old now so not holding out much hope despite having an extended warranty. The only positive is that you managed to keep going for a reasonable while before replacing!
