The car went for it's first MOT on Monday and passed with flying colours but yesterday I noticed the headlights (set on auto on the switch) were coming on despite it being quite bright, although raining. Anyone any idea as to what could cause this?

Reg, mine does tend to be more ready to come on when its raining. Both the rain sensor (for the wipers) and light sensor are on the windscreen behind the rear view mirror. I guess sensitivity may be increased when the rain sensor is activated too. Its no bad thing to have the lights on when its raining anyway. Maybe, for us, its just dark in Notts! NB. If the wippers are activated by the rain sensor and sweep the screen for about 5 continuous sweeps that switches on dipped headlights if the light switch is at auto. Everything is working fine.

Thanks for the replies. It is what I was also thinking but wanted other views. You will also find that at this time of year when the sun is still quite low in the sky the headlights will come on. It is not a fault but a characteristic of most automatic headlight systems.

I developed the same issue today. Even with a bright and sunshiny day the headlights are still on, on the auto mode. I let my son start the car but he did not know. He has been pressing the start button without the brakes.Can pressing the start key without the brakes could have caused it. As I did see a video that you can reset the lights in this way.
Appreciate any comments and help .

Mine does the opposite!

Has to be almost pitch black before they come on, annoying when its getting dark or foggy
