In the 2007 Handbook it states to leave it on gear when on a slope and turn the wheels to the kerb, LR must have got more confident with the handbrake as this is no longer in the later Handbook.

Still basic stuff in my opinion. It amazes me how many people don't bother. Regardless of how reliable handbrake cables apparently are, the gearbox will always offer a backup plan. Good to see most of you still leaves yours in gear, as it only takes a second and can save a fortune when your car decides to smash into another or a person Shocked Gone - TD4 XS Auto, Sumatra Black, Mud flaps and side strips, clear indicators, private plate, privacy glass

When you park a manual in gear, make sure the handbrake is also fully on, otherwise the DMF will take all the strain. Another member of the failed FL2 clutch/DMF club, twice.

Interesting comment.

On the Mini2 Forum that I used to spend time on, many "new generation" drivers would complain bitterly that BMW "should compensate them" for damage caused when handbrakes failed to hold their MINIs on hills.

Many newer cars (MINI included) have discs all round and, when the rear discs contract as they cool after a journey, the pressure from the brake pads is reduced and Bingo, it rolls down the hill without any help from mechanical failure. Trust the handbrake at your peril! Rolling Eyes

I use the handbrake and leave it in gear every time. On a steep hill (this is Cornwall), I'll turn the steering so that the front wheels rest againt the curb too; all classic olddie stuff!

Here's a good example of a new car that has been badly damaged after it appears that the brakes may have cooled and the handbrake failed:

I see your problem!

Quoted from the site:

Deeply upset !!

So last night, at just gone 10, there is a knock at the door, and as the title says, it was the neighbour from across the road come to inform my car is now in his house !!

I'm not really sure how, but the car has managed to rolled down our drive, across the road, down his drive (we're on a hill) hit his garage door/pillar and missed his ute (this is in Australia) by mm's, literally couldn't put my hand between the cars!

The damage was entirely to my car, the neighbour has had a lucky escape.

The drive is a hill but the car sits at the top on the flat, at first we thought the handbrake had let go and the car had rolled, the handbrake was still on when i got in to the car to move it, but the more we look at it all, there are some odd things that kinda don't make sense. White paint marks down the one side that didn't hit anything, and the path from where the car started to where it ended up has a tree in the middle! how did the car go round that? So now I'm wondering if someone was trying to steel it and it all went a bit wrong ? The car had been parked for a few hours without being touched, so i find it odd that it just decided to move by itself, after a bit of testing the handbrake works fine.

So now my love (that I've had from new and only done 6000km's) is in bears auto hospital (great name), waiting for parts, which I'm guessing will have to come from Europe somewhere, God knows how long that will take, the insurance company has robbed me of a further $600, although I think their bill will be a fair bit bigger than mine!! and I'm without my car for an unknown period of time, I just hope they can match ultimate green!

Thought I'd ring the local cop shop, just incase there had been any other similar incidents and the guy on the other end of the phone couldn't give a rat's , didn't even want to know the suburb I was in !! So glad I pay my taxes, so they can have their fill of discount maccas and donuts, while dishing out fines and points for anyone that looks at them funny!

So the plan is to get some security, maybe a tracker system, anyone used these?? I'm not really sure what I should be looking for or how much they are. Any other security recommendations ?? clearly the dog ain't worth sh*t....................

Tigger - great example of the reason to leave the car in gear, when parked. Sorry to hear about the damage to the RS, mate. Cracking car.

I'll probably be criticised for going off 'off topic' Very Happy , but other than the latest nightmare, how have you found it to live with Question I had a Mondeo ST220 before my Freely and loved it, but didn't love the Ford after care. Have been thinking of getting another fast Ford, as I think you've got the best of both worlds with the 4x4, plus the go-kart style fun of the RS.

All looks pretty cosmetic damage. I'm sure she'll be back looking great Thumbs Up Gone - TD4 XS Auto, Sumatra Black, Mud flaps and side strips, clear indicators, private plate, privacy glass

The damage is pretty tragic but, fortunately, it's not my RS! Pheww!

Here's mine:

It's interesting that you mention Ford service Rolling Eyes Fortunately, I went in to this with my eyes wide open, i.e. high expectations of the car and low expectation of service and so far, it's lived up to my high and low expectations in both areas!

The car itself is blisteringly quick. Being a Volvo 5 cylinder motor, it really reminds me of my old V70 D5 (in a good way) and has bags of character. The car's really practical and has great seats (something the Freelander could benefit from Rolling Eyes ). It's a very nice car!

Fortunately, in the 2 years that I've had it, I haven't had to make a warranty claim but, when I took it in for service they gave me a very tired, 8 year old, Mondeo for a courtesy car. They then told me that they'd misquoted for the service and had forgotten about the special oil the RS needs and insisted on adding £50 to the agreed price, but only AFTER they'd done the service! Even when I was signing the paperwork for the brand new £30,000 RS, I had to pay 30p for a plastic mug of coffee - a reminder that you're in a Ford dealership! This is where the premium bands (Land Rover included) really make you feel special.

Fortunately, there's no real harm that's been done and the rubbish, 1970's style, customer service attitude just fits in nicely with the Blue Collar Supercar image of the car! Laughing Very Happy

Very smart Thumbs Up Good point made re, being made to feel a lot more comfortable at LR dealerships, but you certainly pay for the priviledge. My ST220 developed a sticking valve at 39,000 miles and full Ford service history. It was 5 years old at this point, but Ford told me to f Censored k off, when I tried for a goodwill contribution. LR have already paid out for one on my Freely.

It's good you've purchased the Ford with, already knowing the service is appalling. Great cars, which deserve to shake off their poor reputation of old. I just wish the dealers would get their act together.

Anyway - enjoy Very Happy Gone - TD4 XS Auto, Sumatra Black, Mud flaps and side strips, clear indicators, private plate, privacy glass
