Bike

Been out on my bike today for the first time since I came off in September.  Broke 3 ribs, broken collarbone and 5 stitches above my eye. Did the same route to try and face the demons. Have to admit I was a little apprehensive but got past the place I came off and felt good to be back doing some exercise. I was bought a new helmet for Christmas as my old one was split and damaged. The point of my post is to urge any rider to wear a helmet as I think mine saved my life. I also suffered concussion but it could have been a lot worst.  A lot of people say it is better not to wear one as drivers give you more room if your not wearing one. This is rubbish, please please wear a helmet. Please also give cyclist some respect as like me we do pay road tax on the vehicles we own. Thumbs Up

Thumbs Up I keep thinking of getting my MTB out again, not done much since a car accident back in '96

Bought a helmet, new tyres and had it serviced a couple of years ago and rode round a wood up in the dales I think I'm just about getting my breath back Embarassed

Had some bad falls back in the day, wore a helmet then too, but cracked it head butting a tree when coming off

agree 100%, it's daft that a 16 year old kid on a 30 mph limited scooter is by law required to wear a helmet tested to a minimum standard, yet on a push bike that might well do 40 mph + down a long steep hill there is no requirement and helmet standards are a lot lower, brain injury is brain injury, and even at 10 mph the tosser in car that punts you off your push iron will be imparting a lot of energy Big Cry 2009 GS Auto Zermatt Silver - Sold June 21 after 10 years of ownership

Glad your still here. Went out on my hybrid today as I have put the other bike in for a repair after the accident and a service. Cost, £275! could have got the FL2 serviced for less.

Your so right. I have reached some of them speeds, but was at low speed when I came off.  My knees are still scared and the only protection you have is a helmet. I often see parents with their kid not wearing any protection. It makes my blood boil.

I haven't owned a bike for years. I once cycled approx 8 miles around Carsington Water and promptly suffered from DAT (Deep Ass Thrombosis) Laughing

The best minor accidents I had were both when I was a teenager. One involved brake failure going down hill and to stop I had to put my feet on the ground which lead to the pedals spinning around wildly and smashing my exposed shins in. The air was blue Censored Laughing

The other was when I foolishly peddled up our long garden at high speed and hit the front brakes instead of the back. I promptly flew over the handle bars and into the bushes and then the bike landed on me Rolling Eyes

Crazy fool!

I agree with you about helmets by the way Thumbs Up LL.B (Hons) - University of Derby

Helmets save cyclists' lives.
Her Ladyship has seen enough fractured skulls to last her a life time, and, she insists that all 3 of us wear our helmets even for the shortest journeys and that includes on the many cycle ways that we have here all over Switzerland.

Finally, don't forget to have the properly adjusted on ya bonce plus correctly fastened - we've seen many that haven't been Exclamation
