Todays Budget... Fuel Duty ... we need your help....!!!

In today’s Budget, the Government announced that it is sticking to its plans to slap another 16p per gallon on petrol & diesel. They are doing this despite evidence from the FairFuelUK campaign that they could have cut fuel taxes AND been no worse off due to the extra economic activity stimulated by the cut.

I support the FairFuelUK campaign. They currently have over 220,000 members of the public behind them, but need thousands more. If you share my anger at the scandal that this petrol & diesel prices PLEASE sign up to support them at www.fairfueluk.com

They are backed by the RAC, the Road Haulage Association RHA, the Freight Transport Association FTA and the country's leading fuel card specialists the Fuelcard Company and over 150 Parliamentarians.

Every signature makes their campaign more powerful. It’s free and simple to do. By August, the Government will be taking 86 pence of tax on every litre of petrol & diesel – surely enough is enough…Please sign up

The day after the Chinese Gov., raised diesel fuel prices by 7% and Petrol by 6% you lucky folks in Blighty have Osbourne announcing that he is not raising fuel duty in his budget. Imagine the pump prices if the Chancellor had followed his Chinese counterparts. Rolling Eyes So give thanks for small mercies Whistle

Seems OK to me , more miles = more tax.

someone has to pay , so who should it be ????

More important is the statement, 'The government is to look at reforming the VED in the 'medium term' so that all motorists contribute what the treasury sees as their fair share to public funds, and to continue to encourage the use of 'efficient' vehicles'

goodbye to the juice gobblers ?????

Thats a bit simplistic and short sighted.

If duty rises, prices of ALL goods rise with it, food in particular, it won't just be those who travel more that get hit, it will be the average man on the street who pays, albeit indirectly.

Not that simplistic, less than 25% of car tax/fuel tax goes on roads the rest supports ' the economy' elswhere.

So I ask again where does the money come from OR where do we cut costs??/

Where does the money come from for what? if only 25% is used on the roads then it seems as though road users are already paying their way.

Done it.

Mybe iam missing the point here but it seems to me that road tax should go on the roads etc etc.
Heres my thought for the day.
1, if certain cars pay so much road tax per year for the upkeep of the roads then why do larger cars pay more than smaller ones.
I do about 3,000 miles per year in my car and some one else does 50,000 miles but pays the same tax, the higher milage car causes more wear and tear than mine.
2, Now we have some small cars that dont pay any road tax at all but can still do thousands of miles per year. Censored BONKERS.
3, if it was worked out that road tax was scrapped but added to the price of fuel then the more you wear the roads out the more you pay, like wise for under average yearly milage.
concessions could also be made for hauliers and the like, simples.
It dont need many working brain cells to work it out

good point , i agree

I do about 3,000 miles per year in my car and some one else does 50,000 miles but pays the same tax, the higher milage car causes more wear and tear than mine.

No they do not pay the same tax because they use more fuel so pay more tax , seems fair ?

2, Now we have some small cars that dont pay any road tax at all but can still do thousands of miles per year. Censored BONKERS.

True but they emit less co2 which supposedly pollutes the atmosphere , which may meen less people attend hospital for respoiratory problems.

Quite right , hence the reason for higher duty ???

It dont need many working brain cells to work it out

But nobody wants to pay more for fuel , hence the disciussion

yes, this may have its doubters, but I would like to point out, that this same group, stopped the last increase in fuel duty...
the main issue with road tax, I have is its a pointless waste of time...
no one would mind if it was scrapped,... add 1p to every litre and the government are better off, as dont forget how much gets spent in the DVLA trying to maintain road tax, & the cost of policing it... the main issue in scrapping it, is the amount of jobs it would remove in Wales..

its a cash cow that the government cant do without..... however, it was proved by fiscal study that this increase will cost more than it raises, and a cut would have NO loss of value, as the it would stimulate more growth...

our Haulage firms are being taxed off the road, and beaten on price buy our Foreign neighbors, its common knowledge that most firms fill both tanks in France / Holland / Belgium before trunking over, so they have no need to purchase fuel here... & they do not contribute any Tax either !!!

I agree that money has to come from somewhere..... however I cant help being reminded of the Hong Kong Tax system, & how it was adopted by China.... FYI, both has the largest growth in the world, the largest surplus in Government funds
