Air Conditioning/Climate control Noises

I am a comparative Newcomer to the world of Freelander2 motoring and I have looked through the answers in the technical forum however I havent been able to find the answer to my problem.
Ihave a 2008 Freelander TD4 HSE Auto I bought it September 2011 with 46000 miles approximately full main dealer service history.Caspian Blue all the gadgets ....nice.
October 2011 noticed a strange whirring/grinding noise whilst trickling along in traffic...sounded like a wheel bearing but only noticeable inside the cabin
Noise eventually traced to disappearing when the climate control was turned off.
Went back to dealer (Mercedes Benz) who had given me Warranty Direct cover(Joke!!!) Dealer diagnosed Air con compressor and all credit to them they footed the bill £450 and arranged to have it replaced at an independant Land Rover Specialist because Warranty Direct refused to cover it, Unfortunately the noise only stopped for about 500 miles now back as before.
independant repairer suggested compressor may be faulty and we need to make a warranty claim via Land Rover main dealer.Even bigger joke than Warranty Direct cost me £60 to be told by some "expert" that there was nothing wrong with the compressor the noise was probably due to either insufficient gas or a lack of oil.And anyway he had never known a compressor fail on a Freelander2
my limited understanding is the oil is mixed in with the gas and since when does a gas make a noise that sounds like a wheel bearing. So no further forward!
Anybody out there got any bright ideas or should i just turn up the radio and live with it!!!!!

I had a similar problem with my previous car. And as stated the noise stopped when the air con was turned off. It turned out to be the bearings in the cooling fan which cooled the air con matrix. Fan assy replaced noise stopped. I could prove it by very carefully ( with gloves on ) stopping the fan whilst it was running.

same here, the problem was worse when facing downhill as the blower fan bearings were loaded more then.

Air con compressor tends to make a bearing noise when working.
All cars that I've had made that noise, more or less noticeable.
My LR2 did that from day one and it's pretty normal up to a point.
Don't worry, be happy and turn the radio up a little.

I had a similar problem with my car last year.
After hearing a few opinions I started thinking it was all about a faulty air con compressor. But, nevertheless I went to an independent service in order to check the whole air con installation. They started with gas refilling (they said I might have small holes in the hoses). After refilling guess what, the noise disappeared. And from that point it's all nice and quiet. It seems it had something to do with the pressure (but I'm no expert so I can't explain the process).
I don't know about you, but for me the "turn the music louder" solution was not a satisfying one. No matter the radio volume I kept hearing the noise so....

thank you all for saving me a bundle of cash
very noisy air conditioning has been sorted by simply re filling the air con gas and by NOT CHANGING THE AIR CON PUMP

the unbearable noise that comes from the air con system has something to do with low pressure in the air con system

mine was at 300 psi when it should have been at 700 psi 40£ later no noise and very happy

again thank you to all who the time to wright in and let evey one know

i hope this helps any one else that might come across the same problem

I had this loud noise coming from my aircon when using it, had it checked on service , they found it wasnt working properly due low gas & pressure , they drained & refilled it then it had be reset by diagnostics , all free , all working perfectly , ice cold with no noise...

Same here - I was convinced that the AC compressor was failing but local indi first drained the system them did leak tests which were fine, re-gassed/oiled and now all working fine. Tattoos - Why would you choose to look like the wall of a public toilet?
