Check yer nuts guys!

During some recent brake maintenance, I was puzzled when my usual wheel nut socket didn't appear to fit some of the nuts, and actually seemed to be too small. Upon closer inspection I discovered that the nuts appear to be swelling, probably due to corrosion under the shiny decorative cover which is firmly attached to the 'proper' nut. I had to use an oversize socket to get most of them off and they were basically all rendered useless.
The only solution was to get a new set of wheel nuts (stunning service from Duckworth's as usual Smile )
So if you don't want to get caught out on a cold, dark, rainy night when you have a wheel to change ..... check your nuts guys! Whistle Cheers,
Raz

in general I feel the nuts are not best quality, especially the locking ones.

Scotland 2008 Freelander 2 TD4 GS Manual Rimini Red

My locking nuts have been showing signs of 'rusting' (especially during the winter but, with the amount of salt going on the roads the last coupleof years not supprised). I now apply an acid wheel cleaner to them every couple of weeks in the winter and rinse afterwards - keeps them looking nice and also removes any rust stain from the alloy ..... 2008 Freelander2 GS TD4

Dave, I have used an acid wheel cleaner previously on a Merc, it stripped the plating from the air filler valve, it went very thin and copper coloured, I stopped using it when I noticed that, check yours, you may be surprised

I went to Costco for my last set of tyres at approx 60k (07 GS) miles and they noticed one of the nuts had swollen and the socket barely fit it. They brough it to my attention and I got a replacement asap from the helpful guys at Team Valley land rover.
