DPF Smell?

Had a blast down the motorway the other day (of course not exceeding 70mph), when I got out there was a strong smell, I can only describe it as similar to when you have a new exhaust fitted. is this the DPF doing its stuff or should I work out an emergency exit strategy and buy a fire extinguisher?
