Engine Warning Light - Reduced Engine Performance

I have been reading in a number of threads on this and other forums about the orange engine warning light. When I pulled away from a motorway service station last week this illuminated together with the "Reduced Engine Performance" warning. There appeared to be noticeable problem and the reduced engine performance was not obvious.

I read a few postings that talked about battery voltages because of the problem occurrence in cold weather;other posts pointed to Diesel Particle Filter as being a possible culprit (in fact this was the first question asked by the dealer when I described the problem. I think these words would appear also on the dashboard as a warning in this case).

As the car (a 2010 FL2 HSE diesel) has now been taken to the dealer, diagnosed and fixed I thought it would be useful to share the result.

The problem was a broken hose from the emissions control unit. No cause identified, though I suspect the cold weather was a factor (-15deg here last week). The hose was replace and everything is now fine. Less than half an hour labour involved and fixed while I waited.

I hope this helps someone in future !

What on earth is the emissions control unit?
