eD4 in snow

I have been wondering about the eD4 in snow. Assuming one isn't fitted with winter tyres (no snow groove to assist Whistle ) and is tested around an LR experience or on the roads in heavy-ish snow like the other week, how would it cope?

Has anyone on here got one and driven in snow or have any of you took one for a spin in the white stuff? LL.B (Hons) - University of Derby

United Kingdom 2008 Freelander 2 TD4 SE Manual Izmir Blue

As with all 4 wheel drive cares with traction controll as soon as one or more whells lose grip the system brakes those wheels allowing power to be diverted to the other wheels.
With only two wheel drive if drive is lost to both wheels then the car will just stop with no spinning. This was the case with my 2wheel drive bmw with traction controll.
If you only have two wheel drive to play with then it stands to reason thats all you got to get you out of trouble.
Bottom line, it wont be able to compeat with the full 4x4 system and will fall behind every time.

I did try to buy one - u may recall I ordered last April with promised delivery of July. Car didn't turn up was then told October! Car was made available Oct 26th but only if I paid all cash in advanced. Agreement was payment on delivery? I refused and was then told that cash flow issues meant it would be a further 2 to 3 weeks. Heard nothing so chased up and told pay in advance and I could have the car - again I refused. Was assured I would have car for Xmas. Date was then agreed for collection which was Friday Dec 23rd. On the Thursday was told that because it was a 2012 model, I had to pay another £1k. I refused! Was told they would discuss further with Land Rover - I told them if I wasn't in car by Xmas day, I would go elsewhere. Was suggested to me that, I had waited this long it was pointless not hanging on a bit longer! On the Friday, I heard nothing and took wife to look at other cars (as it is for her). Over the Xmas holidays still heard nothing so wife ordered a Nissan qashqai+2 1.6dci Tekna with 4wd with free servicing for 3 years for £1500 less than the Freelander. It is pretty much the same spec as an HSE. Expect delivery in March.

Whilst I was more than happy with a 2wd Freelander - I never had any problems in snow with other front wheel drive cars, I don't go off roading and I don't have a caravan - It felt like I was getting it for free with the qashqai.

Whilst I previously dismissed the qashqai - We were seduced by the Freelander driving position, comfort and the brand. Having driven the 1.6dci I think it drives a little lower and clearly lacks the pizazz of a Freelander but it is every bit as comfortable, has lots more space, two extra seats (kids & short journeys only) £115 road tax, loads more gadgets and 50mpg.

Sorry I cannot report getting stuck in the Snow it would have been interesting but waiting 8 months and then being told to pay another grand was taking the P..s. Things happen for a reason so looks like I have a transfer to the qashqai forum pending....

Enjoy your Freelanders and am sure I was just unlucky or maybe I was lucky.........

Cheerio!

Sorry to hear your story Scott. Not only does it sound like you had the dealer from hell (assuming that you were dealing direct with a dealer), but after all that wait, you still didn't wind up getting one. I ordered mine in March 2011 (a month before you did) and it arrived bang on time for registration on the 30th of June as planned. My mind was completely set on the Freelander and I know I would have been absolutely gutted if I'd had to compromise.

Good luck with the Quasqai, I hope it works out well.

No! But I did get my £500 deposit back. Car was via an intermediary not direct with the dealer but LR were adarment that it attract a MY12 price even though car was ordered back in April. I was offered a 50:50 split on £1k difference but refused on Principle. I guess dealer was happy he could easily offload the car.......

As I said, things tend to happen for a reason so fairly non plus about it and now moved on but unlikely to bother again, although u can never say never - The Freelander is still a fine looking beast of a car.......
