Lee when the engine has started and idled for a few minutes the alternator will have topped the battery just enough to avoid getting the message.

My battery is definitely on the way out after 5 years, but it has seen me through the worst of winter here in London. I took it in to my local tyre'n'battery man, who tested it and said it was fine, but of course by then it had charged itself up. It does seem to be losing power overnight. There's a recent post on here somewhere about checking it by switching the headlights on a couple of times first. Sorry can't remember who posted it.
