Extended Warranties

With 3 years of ownership fast approaching, a decision on whether and with whom to take out an extended warranty needs to be made. Having check the websites for Warranty Direct and Warranty Wise, I have now received quotes and in the case of Warranty Direct numerous follow up phone calls as well.
Due to existing mileage (low) and predicted mileage, Warranty Direct have modified their cover cost to £519 for first year (was £634), £ 934 for two years (was £1143) and for three years £1323 (was £1619).
Warranty Wise have costed their cover at £603, £1055 and £1507 for one, two or three years.
The Landrover cover is for one year only at £585 or £695 if Land Rover Assist taken as well.
I have spoken to my service/repair point (LR approved) and the original dealer and both suggest LR cover the best, one adding that if a problem did occur that the extended warranty didn't cover automatically, LR would possibly take a sympathetic view and help cover costs. A bit of a gamble as LR seem to have tightened up considerably on what they cover even under the normal first three years.
Warranty Direct claim that they cover all wear and tear items and that the LR cover does not, but that is possibly difficult to prove without information from known claims cases.
I would be interested to gain your views and oppinions particularly if you have taken out any of the extended warranty options I have listed.

As far as LR Assist goes - when I purchased my first Freelander (MK1) I made enquiries regarding the situation when towing a caravan, which I do regularly. The person at LR stated that in most cases the vehicle would be fixed at the roadside but in cases needing a dealers attention it and the caravan would be taken to the nearest dealership. However due to space considerations some dealerships wouldn't be able to accomodate the caravan and in these situations it would be secured and left at the roadside. Not a very clever idea in view of crime etc, and so I enquired as to the situation if I was towing a horse box or livestock trailer, would they be left at the roadside. "Good point sir - I will need to look into that and let you know". I never did receive an answer I felt comfortable with so took the belt and braces approach and bought Green Flag cover via The Caravan Club as well. At least then the caravan would be transported to my destination or home.

I will recheck the situation again with LR Assist but my guess is I won't be including this as part of the extended warranty, considering other options instead.

Again if you have any experiences of using LR Assist when towing, please let me know.

Thanks

LR Assist in the past were very good, but the last couple of times I used them (this would be about 4 years ago) they were much less helpful. Non-specialist operatives and a disagreement with the LR dealers - Dealer would say "no problem, get LR Assist to bring it back to us", LR Assist would only take it to the nearest dealer. Then they also dropped the international medical cover, so I dropped them. Don't know if they're any better now.
As regards warranties, I suspect that if you use a LR dealer there'll be less hassle with a LR warranty, if someone else it may not matter. Only used the warranty once, for a blown head gasket at Park Royal. To my amazement they queried it and said they'd have to check with the warranty people, although they did in fact repair it (not very well - it was a TD5 and they didn't replace the plastic dowels, so guess what it went again). The LR warranty is not actually provided by LR, it's provided by Car Care Plan. What I like most is the brochure statement "All left hand drive vehicles are excluded" - opposite a picture of a lhd Freelander Rolling with laughter

At those sort of prices and very low mileage you might be better to just put the money in the bank each year, If you dont get a problem then your quids in, should you get a problem down the line then you should have a nice nest egg to pay for it, thats what I do and it seems to be working well Thumbs Up You pay your money and take your chances. At least if you get a problem theres no hassel with these companies try to get money out of them because they say its not covered due to wear and tare.
