Strange indeed, in fact if the Scots get their way, Britain itself may cease to be.

Funny...the Royal Enfield is still regarded as "British" but has been built in India since the 60s. However, I agree, we just can't seem to hold on to our own companies and Dave boy seems keen to attract more "foreign investment" i.e. sell off what's left of the family silver to Johnny Foreigner. The game plan of Tata in their due diligence of LRJ was that for the Defender model to be evidently commercially successful and, to regain its previous traditional colonial markets of Africa (and others) from the Japanese, the Defender would have to be built in India where low production and material costs would be the foundation of the model's commercial competitive viability. In addition, also in the game plan is the potential to produce two "technologies" Defender - a base lower cost fabrication in steel for developing country markets, and, a higher tech alu fabrication for the existing LR Defender developed markets. The higher tech model may even be re-branded to a new model name e.g. "Defiant" - or vis à vis. This I have mentioned in my previous posts on this subject - those of you who are good web site researchers may well find this circa 2010 postings. And no, before you ask I cannot reveal my sources. And I would not be surprised if should that exercise proved to be successful then other entry model Land Rover's (FL3?) and Jaguar models may all be built in India. The UK remaining as the production location for the higher end LRJ models. This gives Tata the production capacity to raise volumes in production without the need to build new and expensive production plants in the UK. And, forget not that in Q2 2011 LRJ announced that it has signed a letter of understanding with a Chinese partner to establish kit assembly production in China. Don't choke on ya beer lads - it's called survival. Last edited by athelstan on 25th Jan 2012 7:29 pm. Edited 1 time in total |

It is only "easy" to say knowing what I know from a source that I've known for many years - although he did get it wrong the other year on the production of the "old" Jag X type production schedule in India. So with a track record of 99% over 20+ yrs I still believe in his credentials. Re "safe houses" - with all the avalanches being set off around me right now, and the local power station exploding at 04:35hrs this Wednesday morning (total black out) I'd hardly call this place safe at the moment |
