Just note that this poll is showing a 30% rate of those polling who are members of this forum. Forums are largely populated by owners who have experienced problems of one sort or another, or those who are mechanically minded or just interested. There will be many more out there who just don't "do" forums but may well have cars that are perfectly satisfactory - hence not members of a forum! I guess your 30% rate would drop considerably if those were included. My car, for instance, did 74k in its first 3 years as a leased company car. Service history (all LR) shows clutch is original (now at 81,500) Almost certainly its user was not a forum member (I bet he did a lot of motorway miles - hence clutch ok!) 10MY (Sept 09) TD4 HSE Auto in Stornoway Grey (Now Gone) 08 FL2 TD4 SE Manual in Rimini Red (Now Gone) |

Agree with you in part, Pegleg. There do seem to be a lot of clutch failures. However, there is unlikely to be zero failure in any brand - especially when a DMF is involved. Additionally, as the Freely is likely to be used at more extreme ends of the envelope to that of your average family saloon there will be some more instances of failure. I'm not defending it, just trying to put it in perspective. NB. At one time I had a Pug 405 - that clutch was bulletproof! 10MY (Sept 09) TD4 HSE Auto in Stornoway Grey (Now Gone)

Agreed, I would expect a "ruggedised" clutch on a vehicled designed for offroad use, even if only occasional. Unfortunatley, the parts for the Freelander seem to have been sourced out of the Ford/Volvo/Pug/etc parts bin. 10MY (Sept 09) TD4 HSE Auto in Stornoway Grey (Now Gone)

When we got our freely we took advantage of the scrappage scheme and got rid of a 15 or so year old Citroen zx diesel. It had done 145000 miles on the original clutch and was still being driven by me as my daily hack. Thought I was replacing it with a top quality product. My guess is if I'd kept the Citroen it would still be going and I'd be £20k better off. |

When you say the clutch is failing, is it the same part that's failing ie:the pressure plate burning out and is it same for the DMF is it always the same part that's failing or is each case different. |

2007 manual here too, just hit 65k, but also joined the failed clutch club. Next step to find the "how to" thread so I can try and find what is knackered. Pedal hit the floor, can manually pull it back up and down with no ressistance. |

Could well be the clutch slave cylinder which is mounted (rather stupidly) on the inside of the clutch bell housing. Another member of the failed FL2 clutch/DMF club, twice. |

From what I can find so far you sound spot on. I need to find a guide to doing the task now, my wallets too empty to share with a dealer. |
