Rear Brakes / Handbrake - Costs

Rear discs and pads and complete handbrake assembly need replacing. What should it cost?

I'm looking to have the work done, rather than buy the bits and do myself. Just looking for some guidance on what the bill ought to be! Probably based on an independent at circa £45 per hour, but thoughts or experience of costs from dealers / indis etc all appreciated!

......just had my rear discs, pads, shoes and expanders replaced, my local independent charged;
discs and pads - 115.00
shoes - 40.00
expanders - 27.00
labour (3 hours) - 135.00
TOTAL - £317.00 (ex VAT)

My local Stratstone "stealer" offered to carry out the same repairs for approx £550, no thanks.

Just paid about £85 for discs and pads from Paddocks. Not genuine parts but Mintex which I have always found to be good. I have got some handbrake shoes from eBay for £38....I don't think I need them but I didn't want to get the thing apart and find the old ones were knackered.

The manual says to discard the the calliper bracket bolts and fit new ones. I went to the main dealer for some and was told they didn't have any and have never ordered any. Service manager said they always use the old ones! I will do the same but use thread sealant!

The job is a piece of p*ss compared to my old Defender....an hour at most. John

Thanks all.

I've been quoted £540 inc VAT all in for original LR parts (rear discs, pads, handbrake and expanders) and labour.

Feels like a lot, but perhaps not? I don't particularly want originals, but they seem keen to use them and say that they're not much more than compatibles and they can't get the handbrake bits from anywhere except a stealer.

I had the rear discs/pads/hadbrake shoes replaced by a local LR dealer with the costs being met by the supplying dealer (but in the same group) - I asked for a copy of the invoice for my records and it showed a total cost of just under £350. 2010 HSE TD4 auto, Biscay Blue, Almond Leather, facelift front and rear, detachable towbar, front & rear mudflaps, bib spoilers, clear high level brake light, smooth rear wiper, colour coded door handles.

I am quite shocked by the high prices charged to get a relatively simple job done. I did this on my FL1 late last year.
I am in the process of ordering genuine parts (rear discs, pads, maybe shoes, adjusters, springs etc) and my bill is less than £100. Unless something goes horribly wrong I should be able to sort the whole job out on my drive (weather permitting) with the aid of some basic tools and a trolley jack in one morning including a cuppa or two.

Am I missing something here? Cheers,
Raz

I haven't had a breakdown, but think the price for the handbrake shoes alone is over £100.

Adjusters are something like £13 - £17 each from memory. Plus discs and pads.

But, I'm still not sure how it got to be so much! Apparently, getting the discs off was difficult and he had to be careful not to "damage the back plates"?

My new brakes shoes have just this minute arrived in the post! Very Happy

I bought them off eBay from Mansfield 4x4 for £39.10 including postage. They are not "genuine" parts but Ferodo which are fine by me. Who makes LR shoes anyway?

I will be fitting new discs and pads at the same time so getting the discs off without damage is not an issue. However, should you want to re-use the discs I suggest you back the handbrake adjusters right off and gently "persuade" the disc off by tapping it with a hide mallet. Do not under any circumstances take a big swing at the outer edge of the disc as you will wind up with a warped or broken disc. If the disc is rusted to the hub, tapping the centre of the disc with a metal hammer may break its grip.
Gentle heat can be applied but beware melting the wheel bearing grease/seal! John
