No power delivery - low fuel?

Gave me quite a shock..
Coming home tonight, getting low on diesel, fuel computer showing single digits but quite close to home.
Came off motorway at normal exit. Put foot down and it crawled onto the roundabout, as if in some 'limp home mode' almost caused an accident as cars had to take avoiding action. I don't think it was low fuel pressure, tank was not empty, and problem persisted after filling up, then about 2 miles later suddenly full power.
If it is a deliberate feature of some kind, how dangerous is that!

Anyone else experienced this?

Pete.

Yep low fuel limp mode,

When I 'coast' into the Petrol station in limp, after Filling up I lock and unlock doors (whilst sitting in the drivers seat) then go through the start up procedure letting the checks finish before pressing the button then 9/10 times it fires up on full power sometimes I need to repeat procedure.

engine prevents itself from running out of fuel so as not to damage the common rail pressure pump. After limp mode it will stop the engine altogether before it actually runs out.

you say its dangerous but its better than simply running out of diesel and having the engine stop altogether. At work

On the motorway at 60 mph the computer will give you a good reading, as soon as you exit and decelerate/accelerate the reading will nosedive.
As CG states, it's an engine protection measure, not dangerous, if your vehicle suddenly stops, for whatever reason, the danger is created by other drivers not being prepared and being too close.

Fair do, thanks guys. Sure felt dangerous to me with cars tearing towards me, you know how crazy drivers can get on big roundabouts.

Usually it's only buses and cyclists (and the cyclists have been getting tickets recently). Of course if we see a "foreign" registration (one that doesn't begin with L, or isn't Polish or Latvian) then we sometimes do it just to frighten you back into the wilderness. Very Happy
