You say it's a manual.
Have you possibly been driving up the same hill as you've been driving down?
If so, i suspect clutch/DMF.
I had the same problem with my manual. Another member of the failed FL2 clutch/DMF club, twice.

On the recent FR2 off-road trip in Wales several of us noticed a lot of steam from the front of the car - panic have I split the rad? - we worked out that it was almost certainly coming off the very hot brakes after going through water. Conclusion - the brakes do get very hot when using HDC.

Well, thanks for your replies and ideas everybody. Broached the subject with dealer, most concerned (or so he sounded). Gave info as to all of your ideas - and he sounded even more concerned (thinks... was that the problem that concerned, or the thought that I was "talking" to the forum ....?!). Anyway, am taking him for a test / diagnostic drive next Monday (but I bet it doesn't do it when he's in the car...) will inform re outcome. Meanwhile, thanks again for your help.

If the dealer says he cant smell anything on your test run, just mention you might be thinking of trading it in and wondered how much it would be worth, he will soon be able to smell everything wrong then to knock you down on what its worth, Laughing

Oh well, I guess I'd better change my aftershave then. (but, with due deference to James, it's not a bad idea...)

I had fumes coming into the car, nothing to do with HDC though. It was traced to the fuel injectors, one was leaking. Have a look at the back of the engine, on the left hand side just under the cylindrical air intake pipe. If it looks damp with diesel fuel, the number 1 injector may be leaking slightly. Mine were replaced under warranty and I've had no further problems with exhaust smells in the cabin since.

Hope it helps.

Thanks russben.
Took the Service Manager for a spin today - in the monsoon - and, predictably, no smells. Still, very impressed with his reaction and attitude - attentive and nothing too much trouble with reassurance that, should I notice it again, call and arrange another drive. Got the feeling that he was keen to help to get to the bottom of it and, if needed, to fix it. (Roger Young again, Saltash - still very impressed with them). However, will have a look at the area that you suggest - when the monsoon stops. Thanks again,

No problem.

I could only smell the fumes when stationary. I thought at first it was exhaust fumes being sucked into the heater air intake, but it's a bit too far away really.
One day I started the engine while I had the bonnet up and heard a 'chuffing' noise and saw a tiny bit of smoke coming from the area of no.1 injector. Once I pointed it out to the dealer (James Edwards, now Hunters, at Brock) they changed all 4 injectors under warranty.

That's just how mine looked. Poke it, Poke it, make it do it again!!
