yes that is amazing,

had to have our 16year old westie put to sleep last week, ( very traumatic experience )

basically due to old age catching up on her and little if any quality of life left.

personally I love the terrier breed, westies, borders, etc

but don't think I'll get another.............. just yet anyway.

I feel for you there Iain, I've been there too Sad It's always another Border Collie for us. When it happened last absolutely everything stopped until we had another; it took 3 whole days and we've now got the best one we've ever had! Hope you manage to get another.

Tigger, we had a springer spaniel years ago and had to have her put to sleep when she was 12 years old, again due old age problems.

sure it was traumatic, but this thing with the westie is another level, don't know why, maybe because we had her longer and she's been with us through a lot of things, maybe because we are a lot older, ??

but we are going to need quite a long time to overcome it, hard to explain and a lot of people would just say it's only a dog, get over it, but not so easy.

Loosing anything in life is traumatic and that includes pets, hang in there till you feel ready to move on. Gone, 2007 TD4 SE Auto Baltic blue, clear side repeaters, full sized alloy spare.

English by birth..... Yorkshire by the grace of God.

Iain, it won't be long before you will feel the emptiness, the mother in law said the same, but we knew she was not happy going home to a empty house after a lifetime of mans best friend, we bought her a Westie last year, her face was a picture, I think she is closer to this Westie more than any dog she has ever had.

Tigger, we lost one of our BC's last year, we managed 5 days before another BC was in the home Thumbs Up

I find dealing with the death of a dog very hard to come to terms with (and feel for anyone else who is having to cope with it) but, for me, the only way that I can come to terms with it is to just jump straight back into the deep end again!

We will never forget any of our 4 previous collies, but having to get to work with a new pup certainly helped us cope...

We lost two last year due to old age and I was devastated, the house was empty, no walks twice a day, no silly conversations to make, we lasted two weeks before getting another rescue dog. It didn't take anything away from what I thought of them, just reinforced my love for animals.
I just hope that I pop off before this one, Thumbs Up

Get another soon Iain, you obviously got a lot to give to an animal, don't waste it. Smile

Oh yeah, good vid, it can do more knee bends than I can Laughing

As some of you know, I'm a Vet and sadly part of my job is sending animals on to the next life. Indeed I do hope there is a next life.
At the moment, I am contemplating the future of my hand reared orphan foal. I've had pippin since she was 10days old- she's now 4yrs. She has a pooly elbow and despite my best efforts and that of collegues, I don't think it will be survivable.
I administer death daily- having had a particularly bad day on Thursday- an 8 week old puppy with an inoperable portosystemic shunt.
My advice to clients is when the time is right to come to us first... We (as do a lot of vets have lists of animals needing rehoming and sometimes the odd animal in our kennels that needs rehoming).
I will never put a healthy sane animal down. It goes against everything in my moral conscience. I have a good knack of getting people to sign pets over to me and I've never failed to find them a loving future home.
Iain, I really hope that in time you are able to take on another dog. It breaks my heart when I hear about death row at the local kennels... When out there are people who would make fantastic owners...

Quite a few years ago, my parents had a couple of minature schnauzers, Joe the youngest took a turn for the worst, they lived quite rural and the symptoms were that of been poisoned, they did every test they could possibly think of, even CT scans as a few days before he had knocked himself out after I accidentally made him jump and he went smack straight in to the coffee table and they wanted to recheck all things on that side too.

Anyway, Joe lost motor control of his legs and slowly was getting thinner and thinner, even though he was eating with assistance (physically holding him above his bowl to feed and drink). He was constantly drooling too, but after a few thousand spend on his conditional, and the vets been stumped but telling us he wasn't suffering any pain a family meeting was called to discuss the enevitable, iirc 4 months later and the choice was made, the following morning, the day we were taking him to the vets, my mother was downstairs make a cup of tea, she heard a scrat at the door, turned to let Fred (the older brother) out and was shocked to see Joe stood there, bit shaky wanting to go outside for his morning constitutional Shocked , he made a 90% recovery from there on and lived for another three years before passing away in his sleep. To this day it is totally unexplained.

But he is up there with his brothers and sisters, friends and family were they all chase the great rabbits in the sky and the occasional tennis ball Thumbs Up Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

My mother lost a cat a very distinctive one, anyway after a few days it was found dead on a nearby road, After much wailing and nashing of teeth, the cat was buried in the garden.

2 wks later her cat turned up out of the blue for its supper Shocked , we never did figure that one out At work
