Oil/Smoke from Cam/Rocker Cover-Lot of oil in air intake

Hi,

Noticed some smoke exiting the engine cover. once removed saw smoke exiting one of the Round elements of the rocker cover. All around this area covered in oil. removed the air intake pipe and lots of oil inside there. Had noticed an oil leak under the car some weeks earlier and now it seems this is it travelling down the back of the engine. Also oil stains down around the pipe going to the intercooler, perhaps I have that wrong but defo oil stains on that pipe as per photograph.

I know a bit of oil in the air intake can be normal but this seems excessive. Cleary a new gasket for the rocker cover is needed but is there something I am missing? No odd smoke from exhaust though. Something to do with a faulty PCV Valve perhaps?

some photos now in my gallery...

I would definitely start with cleaning the air intake and sorting the gasket I would hope that would solve the problem.

Hi, yes that is the plan.

I've just been watching a couple of videos from 'Frenchies Road Trips' who changed out two plastic rocker box covers on thier two Freelander 2's. Once removed they cut them open to see what might be the issue but couldn't detect anything apart from perhaps the diaphram on the PCV valve may have weakend. But there are lots of narrow chanels within the plastic structure which may block up so now I'm thinking I may just replace - or have replaced! lol! - the whole Cam/Rocker box cover.

Of the two cylindrical parts of the cover where the smoke appears to be coming out of, the right hand one may have an exit which leads to the PCV blocked hence it's blowing the gasket and allowing oil and smoke to exit. This would mean replacing the entire plastic rocker cover.....probably worth doing anyway as cost of gaskets/seals/PCV replacement is close to the cost of the whole thing. We shall see...

From the video it just looks like oil that has escaped from the air duct into the recesses is burning off to me, a thorough clean around the injectors and recesses, along with the air duct then go from there.

Hi,

The air duct is collecting oil for sure as now I find out that the Turbo seals are leaking so excessive oil is getting into the air intake from the rocker cover. damn!

The Plastic Rocker cover Gasket is leaking also.....so needs replacing.

Along with a few other things this is gonna be expensive.....!!! Spent a fortune on this car.....but I do still like it..... Laughing

...of course.....hate it when there is no conclusion as we learn nothing.

My car is with the Mechanic now who tells me the Turbo Seals are leaking but are they? I read from a very old post from Alex Pescaru that some oil escaping there is normal....but how much is some....? For me it has to be too much when the oil is getting past the breather pipe seal and dribbling down the back of the engine to the floor. This is a fairly recent thing, say the last two months or so. I had zero oil leaks prior as had any oil leaks repaired when I bought the car in 2020.

So something has happened to cause this recently and I guess the Turbo Oil Seals can be the culprit. The rocker box cover's gasket blew I think because oily gunk blocked one of the breather holes inside of it so instead the oil forced it's way through the gasket. But I'm guessing the fact I had smoke coming out of the blown gasket means something also....not just oil.

Where does this smoke come from? Is it normal to have smoke coming out of the Rocker cover? Dunno.

Ok so does your car still have the spring clip on the air duct as below.
1

leaking in this area.
2

If so change the spring clip for a good jubilee clip.
3

I also changed the air ducting to the later type recently from the fluted type.

Yours should be the non fluted type as above.

Hi,

Yes I have Hose Clips/Rings on the air intake pipes and I don't think these were leaking anyway. When I seperated the sections of air intake there was appreciable oil siting in the recess of both of them. There was oil stains on top of the aluminium cam/rocker box where the gasket of the plastic rocker cover had blown.

Anyway a new gasket has been fitted now, plastic rocker cover cleaned and checked as ok and put back. Seals on the Turbo replaced. We shall see if it works and if I still get excessive oil from the small pipe that connects to the PSV, hopefully not.

One interesting point.....I also had steering wheel whine....when I turned the wheel right it whined a lot. It begain some time ago and my regular mechanic told me I needed a new rack....and best to get new pump and pipes also. He replaced the steering fluid and resevoir for me and later I flushed it also to no avail. Been pricing up all the parts which is pretty hefty as customs and shipping to Cyprus is expensive now. I asked this new mechanic to check it out for me.

He had a listen in the car, out the car and under the car. He fixed it. He originally said it was a dry ball joint but later playfully said it wasn't but didn't elaborate. But the whine has gone! Fixed.....will it come back dunno....but I was about to order €1,500 parts and poof. Happy days.

While the plastic rocker cover was off he found a water leak in the system.....leaking gasket which I saw for myself so that was fixed also. I guess one day I would be losing more water but now not.

We talked of the reputation of Landrovers.....Range Rovers and my car and he told me they are great cars which have bad owners. For example the leaking Turbo Seals....something not that noticable but will sooner or later will cause a break down or at least much more damage....DPF, Intercooler etc.....dunno....I know nothing but it seemed to make sense. My last Mechanic I thought was good but didn't take the care to look around at things.....hey ho.
