Downsizing alloys?

I have searched but cannot find an answer to my question.

I currently have a Freelander 2 S LHD with 17" alloys and am looking for a second set of wheels that I can put snow tyres on. Ideally I want to get some 16" wheels because the snow tyres are a lot cheaper for these than they are for 17" wheels. However when I spoke to a dealer last week they said that 16" wheels were not available for my car. I didn't really get a reason for this other than the computer said so. Is there any reason for this? Would they really make different models differently?

Has anybody else downsized alloys to 16"?

Thanking you very much in advance for any answers.

In the UK the S model comes with 16" alloys as standard. Andyfr

From what I have seen the French S model has a very different spec. Am I right in thinking that the UK doesn't have anything below the S model? In France we have the E model which comes with the 16" wheels as standard and no terrain response etc.

Yes, the S model is the basic spec. So you just need to find some standard wheels from the French E model. Andyfr

Thanks Andy, I have sourced wheels but my major worry is that they won't fit, or they will fit and then cause some sort of damage to the car/invalidate insurance etc.

Thanks CG.

It is a diesel so good news there. So why are the Land Rover dealers saying they aren't available for my car? Can it really be about preserving the integrity of the model range or something like that?

Just checked on the G4 website.
The FL2 for the 2009 event were shod with Goodyear 235x65 -16MT/R tyres on standard alloy wheels.
They were TD4 Auto SE & HSE - so fitting standard 16" alloys to TD4 should be OK

Thanks Andy.

I am terrified of invalidating my insurance or damaging the car if I change they tyres. I have tried to phone Land Rover UK and France with varying degrees of success. Neither of them were able to give me a definite answer. I have also now spoken to a dealer in Scotland as I assumed they were going to have more knowlegde than most of winter tyres. They advised against downsizing alloys because of the brake ducts. They said that it is not a problem going for bigger wheels but they would not recommend downsizing. Although I am pretty sure what you have said above will be true I'm not sure it is something I want to risk. It is very frustrating and you would think a company such as Land Rover, who make vehicles for snow and offroading etc., would have more wheel and tyre options available.

Once again thank you for your help.

hi
new to this forum but it looks very useful. I have a UK S diesel which does indeed come with 16" alloys with continental 215/75/16 tyres on it. oddly though this is an odd size to source so i've changed them to the HSE 18" with wranglers and was hoping to get some winter tyres for next year for the 16" wheels.

so, go ahead, get some 16" wheels - they'll fit no bother. prob best to get LR ones though...

can you get steel wheels in either 16 or 17". I'd be quite happy not having alloys on when in winter mode. For a free country, it does seem pretty expensive these days.

not so sure about that - but there's usually a few LR 16's about anyway so probably just as cheap. I got a set of 4 HSE alloys with tyres (all new) for £205! My best ever ebay bargain but it shows what's out there if you look for it
good luck

OEM 16" internal diameter

Sorry for the thread revival...

I'm chasing some 16" rims for the FL2 to throw some aggressive mud-terrains on for the weekend expeditions. I've lined up a set of Volvo rims that (with the addition of a spigot ring) should fit the bolts/hub without too much of a hassel, but I realised I have no idea what the internal diameter of the OEM 16" LR wheels is. These may not clear the TD4 calipers!

As far as I'm aware, the 16" variants never made it down under. Would any of my northern hemisphere compatriots with 16" rims be willing to run a tape measure over the internal diameter.

The Volvo rims I'm looking at are approximately 345mm at the thinnest point.

If I can pull this off I should be able to point everyone to a particular set of Volvo rims that are readily available and very cheap which those of you who have real winters could use for a second set.

Thanks in advance.
John
