Hi, sorry I'm new to this idea of changing tyres in different seasons here in the UK, but I got caught out in the snow in my Audi A6 last year and want to be as prepared as possible in my FL2
Having had a quick look at AJS 4x4 which are only an hour away from me, it looks like they have set 16" alloys which I could get fitted with some form of winter tyre.

I've got 17" alloys fitted at the moment, am I going to run into any problems just swapping them? Will I need spacers or anything like that?

Current tyres are 235/65/R17 and the new winters ones would be (guessing) 235/85/R16s

I'm no expert, but, from reading posts on here about fitting 17" (or 18" or even 19") to a FL2 that previously had 16" wheels, I'm under the impression that you will not have any issues as the running gear is universal.

I believe for the same rolling circumference they should be:
235 / 70 / 16"
235 / 65 / 17"
235 / 60 / 18"
235 / 55 / 19"

There are variations that others have tried, with spacers and without but these are the standard.

As far as I know you cannot fit 16” rims on the i6. Not 100% sure but the SD4's I think I may have read that they have the larger discs as on the i6

I've got a 2008 TD4 XS, which does only come with 17, 18 or 19" as standard - 16s aren't offered as far as I know.

What's a i6?

The 16" wheels were standard fit on the base "S" model and the i6 was the very thirsty petrol version.

Why don't you just fit some good AT tyres to your current 17" alloys that you can keep on all year round, they should behave very well throughout what our winter can throw at us in all but sheet ice conditions and allow you to join in with some off road sessions too!

If you do go the spare set of 16" alloys route, they will fit just fine, except with the rears, where you will have to have the old type "hammer in" lead weights for balancing on both the rear inner and outer rim of the alloys instead of the newer stick on type weights as these will hit the rear callipers due to little clearance.

235-65-17 converts to 235-70-16 and that will give you just a -2mm difference

With a good set of AT tyres, would they be suitable for quite a lot of motorway miles as well as through the 'tough' winter months and some off road)?

Thanks for all the input guys. I've opted for keeping the 17" but putting on Goodyear Wrangler AT/SA.
Four tyres, and alignment all in for £640 at a certain well known nationwide garage chain

, anyone else found it difficult to get hold of winter tyres, or even just tyres!
Just got off the phone to my type place and apparently they won't have the Wrangler AT/SAs in until November.

Doing a little more investigation there seems to be a bit of European tyre shortage at the moment because of some change in EU legislation.

You're not wrong they are presented as Summer tyres. Quite weird really.
They are all terrain tyres so should be fine in the winter, and recommended by others on this forum.

They do have a low speed rating though, but are recommended as 4x4 tyres and I can't seem to find anything higher than V for this spec.
