OIL LEAK - ADVICE PLEASE

Last August I had occasion to call LR Assistance - it was a Saturday and our LR garage was closed for 2 weeks holidays so Swiss LR Assistance sent out a chap from local VW garage. Oil warning light on dash had been seen by her Ladyship the day before.

Chap said after he checked oil level (I'd already done that) no problem there oil level normal - just go and see LR man when they are back from holidays. I did. LR Garage said - oil change service indicator not reset at last annual service so we have reset it and checked oil level all's fine.

This afternoon I went to refill washer res and discovered an oil leak!!!!!

The braided hose beyond the two electrical wires you see- right of is covered in black oil. Braided hose here is normally clean and shiny metal.

I'm no motor engineer so what do you ME's think it is - where is it coming from, AND what's causing it Question I'd like technical input before I go and talk to the muppets at out LR Official Service centre.

Here's another pixs:

I haven't a clue where that is on the engine but can tell you this, before an oil hose blows, it normally goes porous which looks likely here if you are not loosing oil. I would get it changed as it looks as though it is 'sweating'.

It's location is this.

TD4-e engine is covered by large black plastic cover. Look towards the interior bulkhead at the back of engine bay. Over the top of engine runs a large black oval tube (I think this is the air intake manifold - motor engineers correct me if I'm wrong.)

This braided hose is located beneath said large black oval tube on the left hand side of top of engine. Hope that helps.

Bulkhead sound proofing mat when wiped will cover your hand in a thin film of black oil.

I'm guessing now, but if it is where arrowed then it looks like a diesel oil line Exclamation to the hi pressure injector pipe, diesel and not oil.

athelstan, I had the same problem last year, the oil leaks from the large plastic breather at the join on your picture.

dealer new right away what it was and sorted it by putting a large jubilee clip at the joint, seems to be a known problem and this is the fix.

I had noticed the odd oil drip on my driveway and took the metal plate off underneath to find there was oil on it which had been running down the back of the engine from the said joint.

Iain

ps it's related to the turbo and is the oil that ends up in the plastic breather dripping onto the braided hose and down the back of the engine, not a serious leak, but just makes a mess !!

EYorkshire I think you've identified the pipe????

Your arrowhead is obscuring what looks like a "pawn" piece in a chess game - there's one also on the right of the illustration. By this pawn pie the stainless steel braided pipe in question connects to the engine block via what looks like a jubliee clip. The area all around here is covered in a film of black oil.

So are we sure now from the photos and the illustration that it is indeed the "Diesel Oil Line" that feeds the high pressure injectors Question

it's the joint on the plastic pipe above the braided hose.

put your finger under the plastic pipe at the rubber on the joint and you will find the oil.

Iain
My previous post "crossed" in transmission before I read yours.

Your explanation sounds right, as there is no sign of oil on top of the black oval plastic tube, but there is on the underneath.

Q: why is there oil in that big black breather tube if it's there simply to convey air to the turbo unit Question

And, what oil is it - engine or diesel Question

Don't worry, it's normal up to a point. The oil on the braided hose is dripping from the airduct tube/connection above.
Have them seal the connection a little better, as you'll always have oil vapours on that tube.

athelstan, the dealer said it was a small amount of engine oil that creeps along the breather pipe and related to the turbo.

not under any pressure or anything but drips out of that joint eventually

probably loads running around with this, but owners don't notice.

EYorkshire - many thanks for responding - appreciated.
Alex - thanks for valuable input - and for the link to the other Freel2 thread and its links - read them all.
Iain - spot on - all questions answered - cheers

Gentlemen many thanks - her Ladyship's FL2 is already booked in for its 2nd year service on October 3rd and so this oil leak is another on the list of things that must be done BEFORE we drive to England and Halewood Factory visit. Thumbs Up

Depends if you are an optimist or a pessimist - me, I like my pint glass half empty as it means I'm close to my next Pint. Cheers mine's a Pedigree. Very Happy
