The garage saying wheel bearings rarely go on Freelander's would make me cautious 
I would say one of the other belt driven pulleys is more likely to be at fault.

| Drop the Aux belt off and see if you still have the noise, if the noise goes check the tensioner pulleys and alternator, steering pump etc for bearing noise/roughness |
