I’ve been running it mostly on 98, sometime 95 if feeling stingy.

The temperature gauge may show normal because the radiator is cool. That was the problem on my previous cars. I have no idea how the thermostat is set up in the Freelander.

SOLUTION

Well it turned out to be a dead instrument cluster..
Don't ask me how it died, maybe the rough terrain.

They managed to reprogram a second hand cluster

I read in another blog about this also,
F4 and f8 (from memory) fuses in the
passenger floor well, I pulled them out
reinserted them and still nothing.

Unfortunately I'm now afraid to take it ...
