those of you that happily brag about sitting in lane 2 need kicking,,

embarrassed to be associated with you by way of an FL2,,, if it's common to this car then i'll be looking for an alternative for swmbo.. Evil or Very Mad

United Kingdom 2011 Freelander 2 TD4 GS Auto Stornoway Grey

I have driven in the US and they pass on either side which is a little disconcerting at first but makes a lot of sense.

I move back to the nearside when I have finished passing, although I will pull out into the middle lane (if there is a large gap behind) when approaching a slip road to allow cars on there to join the motorway. Andyfr

Even though you keep an eye on the mirror does not excuse you for sitting in the middle lane. Younger drivers (of which their maybe many) see you do it and think it is the done thing as they don't know you ARE keeping an eye on the mirror. Thumbs Up

if there are a lot of junctions/sliproads on a particular stretch of motorway it makes sense to stay in the middle lane, but watch your mirror.
( for the hard of thinking, the reason for this is to ease the flow of traffic on and off the motorway )

you need to drive to suit the road conditions and not drive as per a text book tells you !!

For those ignorant enough to ask what the problem is with sitting like a lobotomised sack of excrement in the middle lane of motorways, here's an excerpt from the Highway Code.

Lane discipline
264
You should always drive in the left-hand lane when the road ahead is clear. If you are overtaking a number of slower-moving vehicles, you should return to the left-hand lane as soon as you are safely past. Slow-moving or speed-restricted vehicles should always remain in the left-hand lane of the carriageway unless overtaking. You MUST NOT drive on the hard shoulder except in an emergency or if directed to do so by the police, HA traffic officers in uniform or by signs.
[Laws MT(E&W)R regs 5, 9 & 16(1)(a), MT(S)R regs 4, 8 & 14(1)(a), and RTA 1988, sects 35 & 186, as amended by TMA 2004 sect 6]

Anyone still confused should ask a grown-up, or someone who can actually drive, to explain it with pictures drawn in pretty coloured crayons.

And it works very well too, but even they have "keep right except to pass" signs posted at fairly regular intervals on the interstates in many states.

There are obviously two lines of thought, one that obeys the law and one that doesn't.
Don't care if some suggestions are meant to provoke humour; it's beyond a joke suggest danger on the public highway.

To be fair there is a difference between driving in the middle lane at slower than traffic pace and driving in the middle lane at a traffic flow pace. I do not get in peoples way and do not intend spending my journeys zig zagging in and out of the slow lane. 1. its a PIA 2. its dangerous as you spend too much time looking to see if its safe to pull out, as nobody ever lets you out again after you have done the 'right thing' and moved over.

middle lane for me unless its too slow then its fast lane time, At work
