Ran into the local tree hugger today (Citroen Berlingo), said he was envious of me because the weather had made no impact on me (he had not been able to get out for a week) but of course the weight of my gas guzzler made all the difference (Plonker) told him +40mpg suited me fine. Judging from reaction he does not get much better from his fart mobile. Did not mention that current, on ice packed lanes is 'only' 35/36mpg.
Last Saturday Mrs U and I took the toboggans up the Cotswolds, there is a great slope on Dovers Hill, stopped at the car park at Snowshill (appropriate name what) for a p** and a sup from the coffee flasks, the ablutions were closed 'due to the weather' so signed our names in the snow. Sat there in 350mm of snow at peace with the world when a gargantuam Merc pulls in and immeadiatly gets stuck blocking the way out.I walk over to offer him a tow out which is declined but yes he would like to borrow my shovel! 'He would be fine, did I not know he had 4 wheel drive! O.K. says I. Retired to the warmth of fortified coffee and heated seats to watch the fun of his wife and kids digging and pushing all to no avail. Mrs U says I am being cruel not offering to help again for the sake of his missus and kids, I says he was most obnoxious when tow was offered, So against my natural inclinatation ventures again into the -8 degrees and offers tow out, ' You can't tow me out says the man I' m blocking the way out' yes but I can tow you into that drift, exit, then pull you out. Your car could not do that says he. O.K says I and returns to warmth.
Mrs U says I obviously did not offer niceley enough, I reply the mans a total ranker and does not deserve any help.
After much hillarious sights Mrs Ranker comes across and asks for help, no problem says I and it worked just as I said, though I did twiddle the TR knob and turn off DSC (you guys would never have forgiven me for failure) F/L2 is a awesome piece of kit, don't we just know it. As I was unhitching the rope I heard the kids telling Dad that Land Rovers were AWESOME.

Obsevations:-

The £5 tow rope from Morrisons is a great buy, why knacker up your good kit on plonkers, 2 BMWs, 1 Audi, 1 Mazda and him above in the last 2 weeks.
CG will not like this but hitching tow rope around tow bar bracket is safer to your car than using recovery loop! still pining for my 3dr, no removeable hardtop, no drop glass tailgate, no roof rack, no pockets everywhere to stow all that man kit

Just shows how capable the fl2 is.  Don't put petrol in a diesel. They don't run well.

A good tale. I'm sure in all this weather that a lot of us have helped out the fellow motorists that have struggled somewhat.

I've managed to tow out a 2wd from a carpark in Reigate that had got itself stuck against a curb (there was about 12" of snow there), and I also pulled a BSM (learner driver) Nissan Micra out of a fence somewhere in Surrey. The second I stuggled with as the road was sheet ice (hence why the driver had taken it "off road") but in CCS mode it shifted (the MT/Rs helped). Had real praise from the later but the former where typical Surrey!

I did fail to use the car to pull out Volvo that got stuck on one of the high roads in the Yorkshire Dales. They were in front on a single track highway and so all I could do was get out with the shovel (several times) before a nice, kind farmer with a tractor and snowplow pulled them along. (the tractor was rescuing a defender that was stuck in about 2ft of snow in a field!).

Again CG, sorry wrapped around the tow bar as it looked more substantial than the towing eye. But it was a cheap 2ton towing rope from Wilkinsons. '09 Freelander 2 TD4 HSE Auto

Great story. I towed a couple of ladies in a Toyota Corolla up a hill and they were very grateful and gave me a tin of Quality Street to show it. Didn't have quite as much success with a Berlingo van last week. After much digging and wheel spin a gritter appeared and towed it out......but using my tow strop!
