Oil leak ...

Dropped the car car off for its 60k mile service this morning.

Just had a call to say they have found an engine oil leak from the crankshft oil seal (flywheel end) Shocked Shocked

Said the leak was quite noticable but the oil had been collecting on the plate below the engine and had not got to the stage of leaking onto the ground. That's pretty much an engine or gearbox out job to fix so car will be staying with them over night!

Ah well, chance to get to know the Mini Cooper 'D' loan car ... my teenage daughters think its cool. It's interesting as it's the first car I've driven with a stop/start function.

Good job I don't need to tow/carry anything Laughing Laughing Laughing Stornoway Grey GS ... What a fine motor Smile ... but not any more ... Big Cry ... psst look at my gallery!

did you hear any strange noises Question

I have developed a sort of W-W-Who-Who-Whosh-sh-sh noise when manouvering the car everytime i dip the clutch

not so much when on the flat, but I hear it when reversing out my driveway or office parking which are both on a slope. But i have heard it on the flat today in a multistory carpark

I sort of sounds like something spining is slowing down, so i think it much be clutch related Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

No tell tale signs at all, no noises, no visual signs of leaks, oil consumption not excessive.

In fact other than the battery issue she has been running sweet as a nut Thumbs Up

Was quite surprised to be told about the problem. They said its about an 8 hour job so should have it back late tomorrow (if they have the part Whistle ) Stornoway Grey GS ... What a fine motor Smile ... but not any more ... Big Cry ... psst look at my gallery!

I've always wondered about crankshaft seals.

A part that costs a few quid and takes hours and hours to change. There must be boffins working on a better solution than a rubber seal?

Maybe not Whistle

I've not found a cliff close enough where i would be confident the car would make it without a new noise coming along

Not due to be replaced (technically) till March that when its 3 year of ownership comes up, warranty end 29th November, it will be an expensive few months i think Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

Case closed - I hope

Well got a call late this afternoon that 'she' was ready to be picked up. For info the flywheel oil seal is replaced by removng the gear box - engine stays in place.

Gave them the Mini back in exchange for my FL2 which apparently no longer leaks oil, time will tell. Oh and I nearly didn't recognise my own car, they did such a good job of cleaning it!!!

They couldn't find fault with the battery so the advice I've got is next time it fails to start call out LRA and insist the car is recovered, without starting, to a dealer. Yeah right! I'll stick with carrying the jump leads and sort it myself thanks!

So, barring any breakdowns that's the last itme I cross the threshold of my local LR dealer

The car has now done 30,800 miles with a few problems and its on a 07 plate, had a few issues with this car,i wanted to send it back at one stage, dealer has looked after us.
Landrover has given me a lump sum off a new one, which i might take up when the Disco 4 comes out Very Happy Very Happy
The Car has been back for the oil leak a few times, and then the normal run of the mill, just like some folk on this site,at one stage it was going back weekly!!
At this moment we are happy with the FL2, might not buy the second one or even a D4,WHAT do you buy !!
