Driving Through Floods

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-43088645

Read above report

"Two-thirds of drivers would risk driving through flood water, despite it being the leading cause of death during a flood, the Environment Agency says."

I live near a ford, if I don't go through it ........ it's a 4 mile detour.

WOULD YOU ??? Thumbs Up

Same thing here.

Also people drive faster in the rain so they get home quicker so their car won't get too wet! Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

It is safe to drive Series Land Rovers through floods since they are so full of holes they don't float. Just remember to open the door once out again to give back the water. I used to drive my Series II across a ford on the River Clyde which involved setting the hand throttle and climbing up on the seat. I think the diversion around was about half-a-mile shorter. Everyone can spread it - Anyone can catch it. Stay home - the life you save can be your own!

As a regular fly fisher who wades , one thing I’ll say is people don’t realise how quite a modest lift in water level can cause a massive increase in the force of moving water . They also don’t realise how fast our Northern spate rivers can rise. In the recent past we have had major flooding in Calderdale , these floods have been so dramatic that people have been killed , bridges swept down , and the roads have become an extension of the river . Common sense goes out of the window when panic sets in , same as snow .

On the way up to one of the places I go clay shooting there is the option of using a ford . It has a very handy depth gauge displayed prominently , my personal no go on it is 1 foot as it not a bank to bank crossing , it’s about 50 metres of bumpy stream bed . In the bad weather a couple of years back we approached it in Toyota truck , saw there was over a 2’ on the gauge and then saw a stranded Renault ..... as I said a bit of common goes a long way 2009 GS Auto Zermatt Silver - Sold June 21 after 10 years of ownership

I often tow drowned cars out of flooded roads so i can take the kids to school by tractor. Most people get their cars dragged out of the water, rude people just get their their car moved out of the way but left in the flood. Beats me why their rude to a guy with a tractor when their £50000 car is sinking. Atempting to queue jump often or accusing me of profiteering although i dont charge a fee.

.it was quite possibly too deep for tractor the radiator fan was in the water. thats over 3ft but the waves go in from big front wheels so its hard to judge. At work

It was good to see that he was taking sensible health and safety precautions to keep dry with an umbrella.

Some years ago I was on a coastal track in the Vendee, France and going around a small almost semi-circular bay and a large wave swept in as it approached it got higher because of the shape of the bay. It swept over the beach and over the track and picked up the car (Citroen Xantia) and dumped it on some sand dunes on the other side of the track. No harm done and I was able to drive of the dune with no problem.

Flood water... just add idiots.

It's amazing how many will go through a flood not knowing how deep it is of if there's something hidden out of sight which may cause them problems. Hippo's videos - Honorary Tratterer
