From Today's Financial Times

Higher taxes will be placed on new diesel vehicles in the UK in this months Budget, as the government tries to nudge drivers towards less polluting alternatives.

Ministers have been weighing whether to raise taxes to fund new air-quality initiatives or to find the cash through cuts elsewhere in the Budget since Michael Gove, the environment secretary, unveiled the governments Clean Air Strategy in July.

Government aides said Philip Hammond, the chancellor, has decided that tax increases on diesel cars is the best option and will announce the move in the Budget on November 22. It is not yet clear whether he will increase VAT on diesel sales or choose to create a new levy.

I wonder what LandRover's strategy is going to be? I don't see many petrol SUVs around.

Easy answer (dont buy a new car full stop) see what mr chancellor thinks of that.

As Jules signature says, "if it wasn't so bad it would be funny"

What really irks is that the push for diesel in the first place was made on bad science. Worse still, we all knew government figures were BS but apparently such common sense was never common in Whitehall, until now. And then it's some revelation by some ever so clever new research - REALLY?

Petrol cars produce far more CO2 (in the lab and the real world) - when did that suddenly not matter any more?

Friends of ours just sold their X3 diesel because his wife was convinced it would soon be worthless. ...... And bought a new car - I promise I know which will depreciate more in the next year, and it won't be the three year old diesel X3.

Nothing has changed yet if you already have a Diesel - and even a few pence on a litre will not offset the cost of chucking it in.

It's all hysteria. Although no one told JLR that on used prices of FL2 !!

I don't know why anyone is wasting their time trying to be logical about this.

I would suspect that the Government Finances are in a hole and it's our turn (Diesel Owners) to pay a bit more.

I will go electric one day, but I suspect it will be just in time for a future government to slap a levy on Vehicle Electric Supplies.

This will be necessary to pay for the future shortfall in Petrol & Diesel Taxes, as they are phased out. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)

About 5 years ago our government started looking into this. Even though Australia has next to no electric cars, it looks like our government will introduce a milage charge with GPS tracking of the entire Australian car fleet! Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

I think you summed it up very well - we will be incentivise to change, but then they have to regain the tax somehow. Although electricity isn't like red diesel - you can't track it down, so it's going to be very hard to apply differential electricity tax in reality. Something else they may not have thought through ......................

Same has happened with smoking - huge taxes lost as people give up. And I don't reckon the money is really saved in the NHS - they just live longer to get something else which costs the NHS. Not to mention the tax take from smoking used to be about the same as the whole NHS budget. (I have never smoked, and I am not saying it's a good thing, but these are the tough realities for politicians)

I already have a Car Charging Point at home.
I got it a while ago when the government was supplying them via a grant.

It is fitted with it's own method of communication via the mobile phone system.
I think they will know every watt that is taken for a car.

As most of the incentives of electric car ownership where aimed at business users, I decided to stick with another Freelander. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)

Was it not them that told us all too go Diesel a few years ago as the higher MPG was better for the environment? But now everybody went diesel its worse and we will pay more tax on them. Not a massive lover of conspiracies, however not a lover of coincidences either. Confused

They were bought off by the fossil fuel industry. Australia subsidies our fossil fuel industry by over $5 billion a year in tax breaks, depreciation, subsidies & reduced mining royalty rate. Let alone the volume of raw materials that never gets onto the books to start with! We socialise environmental clean up costs of which a good portion of the 50,000 abandoned mines are fossil fuel related including old coal mines, some of which are on fire adding to green house gases. A good chunk of subsidies going into to diesel for the primary industry are in turn quietly syphoned off for non work related uses! ie diesel dual cab vehicles for the farm mostly being use to transport trail bikes for recreational use on holiday while towing a caravan etc! Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

They got rid of our fossil fuels ( for the good of the planet ), we just import it instead now!!! Rolling Eyes

On another note, see Aston Martin saying Brexit will a catastrophe .Well you didn't say that a few short months ago whilst taking a Welsh Assembly grant to base yourselves here did you? If it wasn't so bad it'd be funny.

My son is looking to change his 2010 Audi A5 convertible TDI and went to his local LR dealer yesterday to enquire about a used Evoque.
His trade in was only 7.5k tops... Shocked

He was looking at PCP on the Evoque which was 63 plate and they also quoted him on a Freelander HSE auto 63 plate......

the freelander came in at 100 more per month, as the dealer said the used value of the Freelander would be so low in 3 years time, even though the screen price was 4k less than the Evoque....

Dealers seem to making a killing from all this demonization of diesel, and if they load the taxes on us yet again we will see thousands of people who cant afford to run their diesel cars and cant afford to change them....
back to the days of abandoned burnt out cars and increased insurance premiums maybe ??

So logically we should be moving our diesels on as soon as possible whilst they still have some value? I can just hear the trade-in conversation with the dealer now "well a few years ago I would have given a good price for that sir, but now......" Big Cry 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto
