Beagles

Having lost Sam in 2015 and Toby last New Years Eve, the Beagle is a breed we are looking at researching seriously. I think a new dog would be something positive to focus our minds on moving forwards after these difficult times with my dad and I know he would want us to have another dog.

I have done just some basic research so far and I understand they are very food orientated and it is unwise to expect them to go 24 hours between meals so spreading their eating out is better.

Any Beagle owners on here? LL.B (Hons) - University of Derby

United Kingdom 2013 Freelander 2 TD4 GS Manual Baltic Blue

We had a beagle. Extremely loving dogs but do need lots of attention.
They are ravenous for food. All our cupboards had child proof locks but she still managed to rob food and they don't know when to stop.
Take lots of walking,6-7 hr walk doesn't even effect them ! but with patience as they do stop and sniff a lot. Walking off a lead is a nightmare as once they get a sniff of a rabbit their gone. We lost our several times, once for a long period and she eventually found her way home ( about 6 miles ) looking very sorry for herself !
How she ever survived crossing main roads god knows and how many accidents she caused in the process I have no idea.

We would have another but two next time to keep each other company. Once both our grown up kids finally leave home !
Loved her to bits, fantastic character, still miss her now over 20 years on. Jaguar x-type sport gone
Jaguar x-type 2.2d sport one of my best cars ever sadly gone

Have had a couple over the years, they are a great breed imho but very headstrong & need a lot of exercise. As you say, they are also very food oriented & will get fat if you don't be careful with their diet. I wouldn't hesitate to get another, if I was looking to buy another dog. (Now Sold). 2008 Freelander 2 (Nazca Sand) SE TD4 Auto. Statutory write off & on WOVR for hail damage but still road legal.
171037Km as of 09/05/22
Superchips Bluefin Flash
Nanocom Evo II (also sold)

United Kingdom 2007 Freelander 2 TD4 SE Auto Tonga Green

We have had 2 Beagles. One we lost recently at 13 to an auto immune condition.

Both lovely dogs but as stated very food orientated and their recall leaves a lot to be desired! Laughing . They're not a dog for someone who hasn't got a lot of time to invest in them. They will also steal stuff and tear and chew it to bits (Our current one's favourite is wooden spatulas! Very Happy )

We're hoping to get another one but it's too soon after losing the last one. When we do though we'll definitely be looking at http://www.beaglewelfare.org.uk/ as that's where we got the last one from. They also have booklets on Beagles etc which are useful for the new owner.

I've also had an Italian Spinone. Again a loving dog with a really chilled temperament. Fantastic with children (as are Beagles) Big hairy slobbery beast but wonderful! I'd have another one tomorrow but due to current circumstances we don't have room for a big dog.

Good luck, you won't regret getting a Beagle. Good companions Thumbs Up

Thanks for the input Thumbs Up We are no strangers to dogs that need lots of walks after 2 springer spaniels and in Toby's case he was very headstrong!

We will do further research over the coming months. LL.B (Hons) - University of Derby

I've got a buddy who has gun dogs and is also Master of a Beagle pack. His view is you spend your time getting labs and springers to do what you want and you spend your time with beagles to stop them doing what you don't want. very pack oriented hound so having just one can be extremely bad for the dog hence why so many are in rescue homes, If you decide on the breed please get at least two. If it wasn't so bad it'd be funny.

my brother had a beagle and I would agree with all of the comments posted.

in my opinion beagles are not really suited as house dogs/pets and happier and healthier with the working life.

Doctor,

I don't have a Beagle but what I've got is pretty close.

And I agree with JulesK, you should get two.

Last year the gate was left open and the boys decided to go for a walk and I had to go find them.

The good news is that they stayed together.

Good luck with your search.

Paul

I have a Beagle - he's asleep under my desk in work as I type this. I'm lucky having my own business enabling me to do so .
He's 11 now and have had him from a puppy.
A very well tempered dog - gets on with everyone.
He doesn't appreciate being left on his own, especially in strange places - he will howl and bark.
Very food orientated - will eat ANYTHING - plus steal any food lying around. I give him a low fat mixer with meat in the evening and some mixer in the mornings - I try and keep him at about 19kg, which seems ideal for him.
He's great off lead, but only in places I know he can't escape from. This however wasn't the case until he was 6 or 7, as he'd run off in the park with another dog, jogger, rabbit - picnic until then.
He was always crated when left at home when he was young - didn't get the chance to eat the house - something they will do.
Overall I would love another one - maybe one day before this one leaves me would be the best time.
