I P address

My laptop is playing silly Censored quite often it says that it has secured internet but not connected because it can't find the IP address, now i'm not hot on computers so easily confuddeled, I think that is a long set of numbers and letters, how do I find them? if I can how do I tell the laptop them? indeed is it the laptop or the sky box thing? (not tv one)
Any help that a 5 year old could understand would be greatly appreciated. Common sense isn't very common.

Sounds like it can't find the router. First thing is to turn everything of and reboot (ie router too), in the case of a laptop remove the battery for a minute or so to ensure that it boots properly and not just returns from a sleep state with the same problem. You don't need to know the IP address it will be assigned by the DHCP in the router and will look like 192.168.1.xxx your external IP address is assigned to the router by BT and you will get a different one every time you restart it.

Actually I look after a few computers for old folk (like me) around here and I have come across a few instances like this recently. One theory is that the Windows 10 updates are installing various hardware drivers without asking and replacing existing ones. I have a HP laptop and every few weeks I have to reinstall the sound drivers. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

Check that the router is giving out an IP address to the computer.

Right click the Windows Icon (Bottom left of the screen) click Command prompt.

Type ipconfig into the Command Prompt box, press enter

You should see something like;
Ethernet adapter Ethernet:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
Link-local IPv6 Address . . . . . : fe80::24c6:3190:5491:957d%6
IPv4 Address. . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.110
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1

The IPv4 address should be 192.168.1.xxx, if it's something else, you have a problem with the router not giving out IP addresses,you then need to check the DHCP settings in the router and the computers network adapter settings;

Click the Windows icon,
click Settings,
Network & Internet,
Wi-Fi, scroll down and click Change Adapter Settings,
click the Wireless connection Icon,
click Properties,
click Internet Protocol Version 4 and make sure that you have selected 'Obtain am IP address automatically' and 'Obtain DNS Server address automatically'

Had this in the past with desktop 'not connected to internet' via WiFi to router yet my tablet was connected OK as was the LAN to my TV.
Tried turning off, waiting and turning on the router but still the same.
Decided it was my desktop problem with a corrupted IP configuration file so command prompt, type in ipconfig/release and after a few lines of messages, then at the prompt again type in ipconfig/renew. The computer will refind all networks and reconnect to the router.
Try it , it may work for you.

I have just had the same problem on an Acer Revo One RL85 which I use for streaming movies, TV, etc. and had recently upgraded from Win 8.1 to Win 10. The IP and DNS settings, which should be obtained automatically via DHCP, were not getting set up.

I managed to get online by using a static IP address and fixed DNS settings. I found Acer Product Support had a later LAN driver than the one installed, so I downloaded and installed it. Also, this morning I applied the latest Win 10 update (KB3201845). Then reset the IPv4 settings to automatic, rebooted and bingo, all OK.

Apparently this is currently affecting a lot of users, found this on The Register:

Do what Still lost in France, says and with the command prompt open when you can't get a connection
Type
Ipconfig /release
It will probably show some errors when it's finished type
Ipconfig /renew

This will get a new address from your router
It seems that the lease time for iP addresses on routers are being reset to 1 day
So go to your routers admin page which will vary depending on whoever your service provider is but is usually 192.168.0.1 bit can be 192 .168 1 1
Or a Web address as I the case for BT
Then look at the advanced settings and check IP settings for lease time and change it to something like 7 or 14 days

Hi Carlsson,

I had already tried your suggested solution but it didn't work. Not sure whether it was the driver update that fixed it or the Win 10 update, but it was definitely one or t'other.

Why is the DHCP lease time relevant to the problem of the network card failing to get an IP address from the router?

Georgeb in your case looks like it was the update from Windows 8 to 10

In my case it just started happening on a Windows 10 laptop with no change on os.

Increasing the lease time has so far resolved the issue, although could be a windows 10 update that has caused it ? 2007 hse auto

This is weird, I have had a couple of people call, me saying that their computers have stopped getting internet access. They were both on BT. I did all of the usual stuff above and logging into the router I could see that there was no ip address assigned to the laptop. I was beginning to wonder if the wifi controller in the PC had packed so I decided to see if an external wifi dongle would work. I loaded the drivers for the new dongle and before I inserted the actual dongle I noticed that everything was now working ok! Another PC had the same problem but this one was directly wired to the router with an RJ45 cable, I loaded the wifi dongle drivers and lo and behold the cable connection started working!

If Microsoft do send out a fix for this I wonder how people will be able to download it? 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

The laptop I had with this issue with was using BT as SP
As I said I increased the lease time to resolve it for now.
I'm on virgin cable and not had any problems with 8 devices hooked up. 2007 hse auto

thanks for all the relies, did you miss the bit about a 5yr old Rolling with laughter sorry it's taken awhile to get the laptop on-line again to answer. tried most of the surgestions already without any joy.

my daughter had the same problem and she phoned Sky who were very helpful, apparently it was an update from Microsoft that has played havoc with some laptops, they stayed on the line while talking her through it even though it wasn't there fault.
If you have the same problem follow this

press and hold the windows button, 3rd from the left bottom row, then press r and let go.
in the window that opens type in services.msc
in the next window scroll down to DHCP CLIENT and double left click on it.
next window check that start up is set to automatic, under Service Status click on the second box from the left, this may take awhile to load, when it has click on, on/start, think it's the first on the left this time but there should be just one option.
took me two go to get it working

hope it helps. Common sense isn't very common.

Looks like it was a windows 10 update

Although Microsofts advice is kinda difficult if you have no Internet connection Smile

As a first step, we recommend customers restart their PCs.

I don't have internet connection problems with my work PC since windows 10 was installed but every now and then (currently now Evil or Very Mad ) I cannot print wirelessly from my printer as it says printer offline. The only way I can print is to email the document to myself and print it from my iPhone. It's a right PITA but I can't be arsed to sort it out as I know it will correct itself in a few days. Absolutely no idea why though. Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto

Has the printer powered down to "sleep mode"? Dropping the network connection.

You could try
Windows key + R
Type Services.msc
Scroll down and find "print spooler"
Click "restart"
