Should this have a cover?

I had my windscreen replaced today due to it cracking. The Autoglass tech pointed out that there seemed to be a cover missing on the bulkhead when he removed the large plastic piece at the bottom of the windscreen that covers the wiper mechanism. He wasn't sure if there was supposed to be something there but you can see right in through to the internal blower motor!
Can anybody shed some light on this please? Am I missing something? The vehicle has been looked after by the dealer from new........
The photo shows the area and hole in question......
Thanks in advance for any help......

So he has that big cover.

Don't know for sure but I will look today when I will go out...

It looks like it should have a grill to allow air through to the blower motor because it looks like there is a foam rubber bit around the edge of the opening - but when Alex has a look you will know for certain.

There is no cover missing - it looks like it but the opening is as it should be. You can see a flap that moves when air recirculation mode is selected, otherwise I agree it does look like something is missing.

Hope that helps. 2016 BMW X3 30d SE in red

As said above, its for getting fresh air into the HVAC, internally there is a flap that moves to shut off the outside air when recirculation is on
