i6 won't rev above 3.000rpm

Ok so I had the dreaded HDC fault on the dash after my starter motor failed.
I managed to get it started by banging the starter with a hammer. However I am now unable to drive the Freelander as it will now no longer rev above 3,000rpm. I also fitted a brand new battery incase that was a problem too, as the battery on it was getting low on power and wasn't the correct spec for an i6 I have also ordered one of those extra earth leads too and will be buying a new starter motor on Monday when I get paid..
There are no warnings on the dash at all.
Any ideas as to the problem of not revving ? Will I need to get it plugged in to a diagnostic tool ?
Regards.

Cheers guys. Sorry for the late reply - I work nights and sleep in the day.
I'll give the guy a nudge and see if he can supply a kit for the i6.
Still a little worried by the lack of revs and acceleration . I've always fixed my own vehicles in the past but I've never had one with all these electronic sensors and gizmos so that's like black magic to me. Just hoping it's nothing major, or too draining on the wallet.

Unfortunately the i6 starter is not able to be rebuilt using one of these kits.

FIXED

Just to say that I bought a starter motor - £165 was the cheapest I could find. It's a Bosch so should be reliable.
Happy to report that the second I pressed the start button after fitting the new starter, the i6 fired into life. Also fitted a secondary earth lead as in other people's posts to prevent this happening again. It now revs freely through the range. No more errors on the screen, HDC faults , anything.
However, no puddle lights...............................
