Amsterdam all the way for me. If you have never been spend a day doing the touristy areas such as the red light, have a pint in the pub with a nautical theme right slap bang in the middle of the red light and laugh at the men plucking up courage to go and sample the goods on show in the window

Then move out to Liebslpein which is a bit up from Dam Square and enjoy the slow pace of life.

Then get a 2 or 3 day tram ticket (cheap) and just get on a tram and let it take you around the city. Get off anywhere and sample it.

The drugs side has all changed now. You used to be able to go in these coffee shops that sell pot and have a beer and chill out talking to people from all around the world. Really good. But now they can't serve alcohol in them and pot doesn't really interest me so I end up finding some more traditional Dutch boozers on the outskirts of town. In between site seeing of course And of course there are loads of canals and boat trips.

It's normally an annual pilgrimage for us but it's Mrs H's 50th this year so I've booked a surprise (so don't go telling her!!!) 5 days in New York. Why New York - well because I have never been of course.

There used to be a place in Amsterdam that provided certain "services" and you could pay by cheque but if your cheque bounced they would put it in the window. Evidently journalists used to drop by regularly to see if there was anything juicy worth reporting. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

There's a coffee shop called FZ's (because it plays Frank Zappa a lot). When you could still drink and smoke weed I remember the first time I went in there I was in hours and got chatting to a couple who lived not far from us and had sold up and lived in a camper van on the outskirts of the city. Didn't touch the pot but when I came out of that place I was practically stoned on passive smoking. The 5 minute walk back to my hotel took over an hour as I went in the totally wrong direction.

Went back there about 18 months later (no it didn't take me that long to find it again from the hotel ) and I bumped into the same couple!

People always seem to forget Bavaria/Austrian border areas. Amazing part of the world and easy to fly into Munich. The scenery is unbelievable and of course you have the huge beer halls to sample the local delights
