First MOT to be extended to 4 years.

As announced in the budget today the first MOT on a car or motorcycle is going to be extended from 3 to 4 years. That's the first part of their master plan to switch to the 4-2-2 system they've been banging on about for years. Next step is to make MOT's bi-annual. You wait and see. VOSA is against it as they say there will be more dangerous vehicles on the road and I agree. What about you?

Gut reaction is a resounding "no". I wonder if they would make it more stringent if it was bi-annual?

Only for 95% of new cars registered from April 2017 and only then in the vehicle's second year. Freelander 2 owners will 'always' pay the current rates.

It remains to be seen if the 'road fund' is actually used to fund roads though...

This is a bit confusing, are we mixing up VED and MOT? I understand that from 2017, three new VED bands will be introduced for new cars. While the cost of road tax will be set according to emissions, as today, the bands will be updated in line with new technology. It won't affect cars currently on the road.

‘There will be three duty bands: zero emission, standard and premium,’ said Osborne. ‘For standard cars – that covers 95% of all cars sold in the UK – the charge will be £140 a year.

Expect a huge surge in sales of small cars in early 2017. Is the MOT thing for real or just a suggestion? 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

Sorry typo should have tax there. Rolling Eyes

I'm aware that it doesn't include current cars.

Zero emissions, free

1-255 g/km, £140

Cars over £40k pay a £310 supplement for 5 years.

Four years to the first MOT is too long I feel, now folk cant walk 100yds without going in the car, the mileages are a lot more than they used to be, my neighbour even takes the dog for a walk in the car. Shocked

My company car would have done 130000 in four years, and with service intervals increasing too, some now 20000 and no doubt it they will get more than that between services, it could be quite some time before items get looked at.

It will need some high profile government nob to have his family mowed down by a 3 1/2 year old car with a fault that could have been picked up at a 3 yearly MOT to get them to think again.

Lets see how quickly they up the current tax costs to try and force people into the newer cars. Wont be long before pretty much all FL2 are hitting £350+ and I refuse to pay that much

Who on earth is asking the govt for a first Mot at 4-years, and bi-annually thereafter? Certainly not the garage owners.

Does the govt hope to save money or something?

Is this the same perverted logic that saw the end of tax discs?

Well I know it's certainly not VOSA who monitor the MOT system. We were warned on seminars that the govt. were pushing for 4-2-2 and we were told to ensure that when we carry out first tests on vehicles to make sure that any failed item was recorded. In other words, dont just replace that stop bulb, adjust that headlamp, top up the windscreen washers, fit the spare wheel, replace that wiper blade or correct any other failed testable item WITHOUT RECORDING IT so that the govt. gets a true picture of the percentage of vehicles that fail to reach minimum standards after 3 years. Obviously the govt took no notice of the data. Whistle

This is how it operates in France, so could it be an EU directive? or would the government have broadcast the EU connection far and loud.

Although in France, all CT (testing) stations are 'stand alone' operations with no connections to a garage.
