If any *members* are travelling to Greece/Athens this summer, I'm happy to offer impartial or practical advice.

Nick, I have a question: If I go to Greece this summer, shall I take Euro's or Drachma's? |

Probably Drachmas - why, the new designs have already been approved by Brussels:- www.drachma.gr 2013 SE TD4 in Mauritius Blue [Written off] |

Don't blame you, 'Rife is an awesome place - I used to go surfing/windsurfing in Fuerte back in day... Yes, there are problems. A couple I can think of are 1) there'll be regular strikes when it dawns on the ppl that Tsipras isn't the man they thought he was (my money's on end of the month) 2) Infrastructure isn't paid for eg some airports can't afford this year's navigation way-point certification - which means no night flights 3) Some hotels are going bust - 1 big one here in Athens which is a potential worry for anyone visiting Greece 4) some islands are being swamped by migrants/refugees - locals and authorities can't cope with the sudden influx since Jan - eg Kos, Samos and Mytilene (Lesvos) 5) everywhere here in Athens looks a bit run down with 'street art' everywhere. This is the one thing that gets me down... There are some advantages, though 1) Out of control development of coastal areas has all but halted 2) Establishments seem to really care about keeping your custom (used to be horrendous) 3) Less traffic and ppl are noticeably going slower on the roads to save fuel 4) The sun is shining! ...and things are generally not as bad on the ground as the wailing harpees on the news make it out to be. But I guess you knew I was going to say that... Anyways, I hope that this post has been informative, and am happy to answer any questions 2013 SE TD4 in Mauritius Blue [Written off] |

Yep, still the same - odds 'n' evens in the city centre, but due to emission regulations and a massive clean up there isn't that much of a 'smog' these last 5 years.

Always fancied going back to Athens. Stayed there in January 1982 when me and the wife (girlfriend at the time) got off of a ship in Pireaus after coming home from South Africa where I was working at the time. We were practically skint and were walking around travel agents trying to get a flight home without much luck - all way above our means. We finally went into one and the kind bloke behind the counter must have taken pity on us and said "You are students, yes?" "No" I said. He said it again, I said no again. He said it more slowly and louder and winked at us. I then said 'yes" and we got a pair of dirt cheap flights home! I think that student flights were heavily subsidised at the time. |
