Xenon Coding

Do all cars that came fitted with halogens need re coding to accept genuine LR xenon headlamps? Or did some models already come coded? My car is a 2007 HSE and had halogens from new.

Any coders on here that live in Kent and would like to earn a few beer tokens to code my car if it needs it. Very Happy

Can't be coded for both.
The information is stored in the same location.
Either one or the other.

OE xenons have self levelling motors built in and your car won't have either the wiring it the level sensors on the suspension.
.
Might I suggest you consider MY 2011 onwards standard projector headlamps and install osram nightbreaker plus bulbs. There is to my opinion a very good improvement and no compatibility issues.
.
If you search on the forum I've added notes from when I converted mine including the reasons NOT to try aftermarket HID xenon conversions.
.
Kind regards from Fred

The halogen lamps have the manual adjust.
The voltage level for leveling is supplied on the lamps connector on the same pin, being either automatically computed or manually supplied from the leveling knob.
He can install original HID headlamps and the self leveling will be "manual" leveling. Laughing
But he should modifiy the car's configuration as on halogen lamps the supply voltage is modulated for DRL where applicable.
On the halogen lamps this modulation isn't obvious because of the filament luminous inertia, but on the HIDs this will be noticed.

Didn't I read somewhere that auto levelling is a legal requirement with Xenons and manual levelling is an MoT fail?
Or am I making that up?
Edit: Just had a quick search and it looks as though manual levelling is OK, but it would be worth checking. Ex AA Series III LWB Safari - Gone
300TDi Disco (bought new - terrible car) sent back after 18 months
Freelander 1 Estate - leased, given back at end of lease
200TDi Disco (bought from a mate with 100,000 on the clock) - Gone
Disco 2 TD5 - sold and exported to France
FR2 TD4 GS - Gone
FR2 SD4 HSE - Now changed for a DS
New model ex-demo Evoque S 180 in white
Unable to order a new DS, so gave up. Now have a Volvo S90 Recharge.

The MOT examiner can only check anything that is fitted. If any device is fitted and forms part of his formal checks and it doesn't work then he will fail it.
.
So if auto levelling is not installed he cannot check it; therefore he equally cannot fail it!!!!!
.
No worries on that score.

Auto levelling should be a legal requirment and will/should get picked up on an MOT in my opinion.

Lots of people seem to do it with no issues.

You take you chances though you may be unlucky or lucky (unlike the dazzled drivers coming towards you at night).

They have manual leveling, so why should they dazzle anybody. These are OEM xenon lights, so where are your facts to support your theory

Why do they have self levelling fitted out of the factory?

If you are going to adjust your beam height properly every time you load the boot, carry passengers, and go over a dip in the road then fine but that isn't going to happen.

I'm not having a pop it's your car do what you want.

My evidence is that I work nights regularly and often get dazzled by people who have incorrectly fitted xenon/hid conversions. It is not nice or safe.

Whole website and e petition dedicated to the subject. Land Rovers in most forms don't fair well !

I wonder how these 'dazzled' drivers managed to identify the particular model

I had mine reprogrammed for Xenons, they work perfectly well with Halogen or Xenons now.

As regards the legality. Yes, factory fit will have self levelling. And If a self levelling system is fitted, it should work. HOWEVER, If it isn't, it's not a fail. Quirk of the law. Thumbs Up
