Owing to elderly bint reversing into my stationary Freely in a local car park last week (and catching her red-handed), I need a new N/s rear door and associated trim. Total bill 」1089!! I'm clearly in the wrong job, as the damage looks to me like it could be done for about 」200.

In light of Shilen's review of his new X3, and having had the X5 for most of the week (and will until Tuesday next), I thought I would update this thread with my unbiased findings. These opinions are purely based on my preferences, what I do for a living, and I have tried to be as objective as possible without being biased either way.

I think you have summed it up quite well although I think the X5 would be more comparable to the FFRR or RRS than the Disco? The m-sport comes with a black roof lining which in combination with black dash and seats makes the interior very dull. I opted for the oyster leather with brushed aluminium trim which really uplift the interior considerably - see below

This simply demonstrates a lack of understanding of what the FL2 actually is! It's not a competitor for the X3 - the X3 is a road car whilst the FL2 is a genuinely off-road-capable vehicle, and it's on that off-road capability where the money has been spent. If you're not interested in that capability then why buy a Land Rover in the first place? Basically you bought the wrong car when you bought the Freelander, but rather than admit that you criticise the car for not being what it was never intended to be. For those of us who actually want the off-road capability the FL2 is worth every penny, and none of its so-called competitors comes close! |

Presumably the X5 (and X3) have run flat tyres?

To paraphrase pab - "you can say what you like about my wife BUT don't you dare criticize my car" MY 09 GS manual in Lago Grey, Wood Co arm rest and side bumper strips - now sold.

If you want a 'genuine off road capable vehicle' and interior quality and creature comforts don't interest you then you buy a Defender. The Freelander 2 isn't just about its offroad capabilities its aimed at the likes of the X3, Q5 etc and tries to strike a balance between on and off road. And I DIDN'T buy the wrong car I have loved owning my FL2 but put quite simply in the current climate its past its best - thats why there is a new one coming out in the next 12 / 18 months. |

But the annoying thing with the D4, unlike the Freelander, when you put it in Command Shift, it stays there, with the D4 if you use the Paddles to change gear with, if you don't change gear again after 60 Seconds or so, it drops back in to Auto, don't think it does this in Low but does on the road. |

For your argument to hold water if i was looking to replace my FL2 with a similar vehicle i would have to have considered a tractor or a tank... |

Not if you put it into S first. The Discovery gearbox is designed so that when in D and you use command shift it will default back to auto if you don't use the paddle for 15-20 seconds in normal use. If you use command shift in S it will hold the gear selected until you change it, or the vehicle thinks it's about to damage the gearbox by being in the wrong gear. With the introduction of the 2014MY there is no longer a D4 it is now just a Discovery. |
