Hotfire Engine

There is much talk around for the forthcoming Freelander variant, as to how it will look.
Does anyone have any inkling or thoughts on the hotfire engine being talked about and a likely contender for he power plant in the new model.

Will lower CO2 emissions sap power? Will it affect torque?
With new technology is a DPF still necessary?
Will they still be 2 litre or will smaller higher power units be used?

This might be a place to start discussing this new unit and how it may affect future models given the off road demands of our vehicles and the need for them to be a little different to mainstream cars.

Discuss.........

That's what I would like to know, I don't want a resurrected K series lump with an aftermarket Halfrauds Injection system.

It is sending shivers down my spine as every time I see Hotfire it reminds me of Hotwheels Laughing

I have been in discussion with some of the R&D guys at Gaydon.

The Hotfire engines are a new modular design of 4 cylinder engines initially. Using the same 4 cylinder block for both the petrol and Diesel engines.

The units are intended to be 2.0 capacity with room for expansion for higher capacity, but the same block and head arrangement will be used for power outputs from circa 150bhp to 400/500bhp potentially.

Single and twin turbocharging is planned and emissions capable of under 100g/km in the front wheel drive cars.

There is massive investment in these new engines as they will power Land Rover and Jaguar products. For the fourth coming X Type replacement will have these new engines and the R&D guys said they have to compete with BMW for power, mpg, and emissions.

There is even talk of a 230/250bhp 4 cylinder Range Rover Sport that will produce as much torque as the entry level 3.0 TDV6 but with under 130g/km on emissions.

I am really looking forward to seeing these new engines perform in anger! If they are going to be designed with 2/3/400bhp, the normal models with circa 200bhp should be pretty bullet proof. Freelander 2 HSE Lux 2013MY - Barolo Black with Ivory Leather. I doubt there will be much problems with these engines going into the rough stuff, if a PSA engine can do it then I'm sure LRs own ones should be good.

I'm looking forward to the new engines, the TD4 is fine but its starting to become dated and a little rough around the edges. The next generation Freelander is my favoured replacement for the current one, but I'm expecting something special under the bonnet, smooth, quiet, economical, reliable etc. I would like to see a nice petrol engine available not just on the top spec cars as my annual mileage doesn't really justify a diesel. 21MY Defender 90 S 3.0 D200

Id agree with the TD4 comments, whilst its a good engine, My E Class Merc with the 3l V6 Diesel engine is worlds apart as far as smoothness and quietness is concerned.

The TD4 does sound like an old clatter wagon, even compared to the newer 2.2 Diesel engines Freelander 2 HST Stornoway Grey

To be fair, any V6 diesel will be smoother and more quiet than a four cylinder diesel, so it is not a fair comparison.

But I agree, that the TD4 is not the most refined 4 pot on the market. But one thing I will say, if you constantly run the TD4 on fuel like Shell V-Power, it is much quieter than running on the cheap stuff. Freelander 2 HSE Lux 2013MY - Barolo Black with Ivory Leather. Second Mavs' comment above, even my 3 pot diesel A2 is much smoother on Vpower or with 2SO and having driven most of the summer (and 4000+ miles on Vpower) in the Freely it is much improved.

Now Jag have launched their SUV 'concept' perhaps that will be the first new car from JLR to use the new engine..... eh tu?
