I agree with Fred DONT try any novel methods of priming the filter you are introducing unfiltered fuel to the clean side of the filter

Dont do it Evil or Very Mad
(unless you tow a caravan then in that case fill your boots, infact vanners can simply discard the old filter and not bother fitting a new one, your engine will be killed by the van in any case) At work
At home

Hi Folks, have seen this subject done to death on lots of sites, hope this helps -
The new filter must be primed, there is no other method, ignition switches on and off, turning the engine on the starter, towing etc. You'll just knacker the fuel pump and/or starter eventually.
You can fill it off the car if you really must but as the guys say, you risk contaminating your very sensitive injectors and a big bill.
Ideally the LR in line primer fitted pre-filter is great but expensive. Laser do a kit that fits GM and all the PSA units including our TD4 (Duratorque) but it's still £100+.
For a fiver you can get a priming bulb that will do for any diesel filter if it's fitted the right way -
Fit the new filter to the engine and make all the connections except the 'To Engine' one, front right, facing the filter.
This is the 'sterile' one with the Orange Cap when new.
Connect the pump bulb WITH THE ARROW POINTING AWAY FROM THE FILTER using a short piece of clear tube.
Fit a piece of tube to the bulb outlet and into a container, just in case there is any contaminant in your bulb or tubes.
Pump until you get airless diesel and connect the 'To Engine' pipe.
The little darling will now start first time but run at a fast idle for any little air bubbles to clear.
If your stingy you can put the diesel back in the tank as it will be filtered on its way to the engine.

Please may in kindlt suggest thay you read my post on page 1 and the reference to my specific post on changing the diesel filter.
.
In brief you fully install the new filter and backfill up the water drain hole with a plastic pipe and funnel.
It's so easy, so cheap, no fancy adaptors and so ethically clean and correct!
.
