Oil Service already?

When I took delivery of my Freelander with 9600 miles on the clock the salesman assured me that it had been serviced and that the service indicator had been reset and I wouldn't need to worry for quite a while. Well, 2000 miles later it tells me that an oil service is due. So either this thing is heavy on its oil, which I don't believe, or I was lied to when I took delivery. I will be contacting the dealer shortly.

Oil service due indicator is dependent on the number of DPF regenerations that the vehicle completes. Having said that I'd be very surprised if the oil service due indicator came on within 2000 miles of a normal service which would lead me to suspect that while the Dealer reset the service indicator they failed to reset the separate oil service indicator.

Either way pretty shoddy by the Dealer, particularly if a LR Main Dealer, more acceptable if bought from a non-LR outfit.

Thanks for that.

I called this morning and their opening offer was to go half and half on a service. £400 for an oil and filter change, I don't think so. Eventually they agreed to do this service FoC as a goodwill gesture. So a promise turns into a goodwill gesture - hey ho.

Apparently if there's more than 3 months to go to an annual service LR consider that the next service has to be done regardless of any activity as part of pre-sales. My indicator has come on because the vehicle is approaching 12 months of age.

I suppose I should feel OK about this but i don't.

Incidentally the salesperson is no longer with them.

Dare I suggest that you dip the oil when you go to get the vehicle back? - just to make sure it's nice clean stuff and that the job has really been done! Service indicator should be reset too. Gone... 2013 XS TD4 Manual Firenze Red

I'll certainly be doing that, probably in a lay by down the road from the dealer. Trust is at a low ebb.

Oil change/Level

When checking the oil, do you get a clear line of oil across the dipstick or do you get a smudge of oil way past the level marks. My GS oil level is always a smudge, making it difficult to tell if I need to top up or not.

I check the oil with the engine cold. Remove stick, wipe clean, reinsert, withdraw and the oil is always past the marks as if the engine is overfull.

Mine has just displayed this message. It's 20 months old with 21,000 miles and It was last serviced with 12,000 on the clock.

Sound expensive when you can get the parts for 50 quid to do it yourself.

I would check the oil there and then. A few miles down the road with a diesel and the oil will be jet black again.
If it is black but recently changed then it should feel silky smooth between fingers , no grittiness.

Good point. I suppose if they've test driven it I'd be snookered.
