All freelanders have this corrosion, It is not normal, Landrover should recall all freelanders for this problem. I have even seen this on brand new models in the showroom. Evil or Very Mad

your average merc owner would be delighted with such corrosion!
Anyway - my towbar bracket seems to be corroding too . the paint is flaking off.- not good after only 1 year. 07 Freelander 2 TD4SE Tambora Flame, side steps, privacy glass, mud flaps, boot liner and a tow bar. Ok it's the Wifes but she lets me drive it occasionally - if I've been good!

Jules 1967 - where do you have this knowlege from???
I drive Mercedes since at least the past 15 years and I have never had any problem with corrosion.
My present business car, a Mercedes E 320 cdi auto, is very well build with top qualitiy, and corrosion is non-existent.

I've been running them since the mid 90s so know them well.

To be fair, post 04 ones are great, as are pre 1998 models. Hence why I bought a 2005 E270 rather than the early 2004 320 I wanted and yes mine is rust free too. They are pretty much back to the mercs of old now but 98-04 was a pretty bad time.

They went over to water based paints in 1998 as part of the green thing and at the same time allowed the accountants into the factories (never a good idea). One of the genius ideas was to stop galvanising. Hence, whilst my 2000 E class was lovely, it did spend 6 weeks of the 5 years I had it, in the body shop. MB were forced to introduce the legendary 30 year corrosion warranty to avoid losing customers and spent several thousand pounds repairing mine alone.

Mine was reasonably ok. I had all 4 doors resprayed, plus the boot lid and 2 wheel arches. I still was booked in for a sill repair (bubbling well) when I traded it in, but some suffered really badly with failed spring perches and front cross member, as well as rust on the top edges of the doors (under the rubber seals), corroded wheelarches and boot locks. I know of people that have had all 4 doors and both front wings replaced under warranty. Even my Father's 2003 E220cdi has had some warranty work done to the rear wheelarches (fronts are aluminum anyway) as well as all brake pipes replaced due to corrosion. I'm not knocking MB, I'm on my 3rd and will change for another when thetime comes. They've honoured the warranties without question and been very accomodating but it shouldn't have happened in the first place.

Hence a bit of rust on the exhaust brackets would have been laughable to me and many others a few years back. Very Happy 07 Freelander 2 TD4SE Tambora Flame, side steps, privacy glass, mud flaps, boot liner and a tow bar. Ok it's the Wifes but she lets me drive it occasionally - if I've been good!

England 2008 Freelander 2 TD4 XS Manual Baltic Blue

Hi,

Just traded in my silver merc c class coupe (2002) after 6 very enjoyable years (only intended to keep it for 3!). Have to agree about the paintwork..stonechips from day one. The paint appeared to be very soft and chip easily ( spent a fortune on touch up paint!). Never had any problems with corrosion anywhere else though.

By comparison the FL2's paint has a depth to it and initialy feels better quality..only time will tell.

I thought that as the exhaust was mild steel it rusted very quickly, as exhausts do on all cars, unless they are stainless steel.

I'm not bothered with rust on the exhaust, I'd expect it almost.

If it really bothers you, you could always rplace witha stainles item, that will come with a lifetime warranty

Rich

I think it would be wise not to put up your car details, engine size model and your VIN number on a public forum

I have been dissapointed to note that some paint has flaked off the lower front wishbones, thus revealing rust, also some non stainless fixings used under wheel arches that are going rusty.

Really poor quality items which ruin an otherwise fantastic vehicle.

Just had its first birthday last week, and no significant problems.

Still loving it.
