BRAKE WEAR.

My car has done 51000 miles and the discs and pads are original from new.I have noticed the front pads are only half worn but the rears are three quarters worn.Surely the fronts should wear out first? Anyone else noticed this? Stornaway grey SE auto with 18" alloys

You will find with Freelander 2 and other vehicles fitted with Electronic Brake Force Distribution that the rear pads will often wear faster than the fronts. It is a factor of modern braking systems and nothing out of the ordinary.

You are not alone. My back brakes went well before the fronts. John

As AD said, rears tend to be smaller brakes. Haven't taken much notice of ours to know but would guess the rear discs and pads are smaller as they do less work Mine: 2012 Golf GTI Edition 35

rears much smaller
Currently using two sets of rears to each set of fronts - this is from someone who can destroy 8 sets of front pads on a Transit van in two years and only 90k miles.

Yes I even noticed the amount of brake dust on the rears after a few days of ownership. It's the way of the new intelligent braking systems. You would wonder why they don't beef-up the rears if this is the way things are going, but then again it's a wear item that brings in profits during servicing.

Just think how lucky we are that the engineers made it like this so that we don't have to think about what's happening.. Rolling with laughter Freelander 1 HSE TD4 Manual in Falklands

New disks every time!
6k miles service, brakes will not make it to next service sir, would you like new pads?
Lease company always refused, never made it to next service!

Strong letter of complaint about likely brake failure. When they did fail (spat pad out at speed), insurance company refused to pay out, service records advised brake change = known defect Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her

I just replaced my original front pads at 64K miles, there was still plenty of life left in them. One front disc warped first.
