Steering Rack - Rusty?

My wife noticed some steering issues with her 2007 FL2 and took it to the local garage. They've had a look and say water has got into the steering rack and that when they removed a rubber grommet/seal (?) rusty water ran out - so the rack must be rusty and needs replacing.

Grateful for anyone's thoughts / comments.

Thanks

PS: If the rack does need replacing, can I use a second hand one? Are they all the same (ie will a 2010 fit a 2007?). Are there other bits that will be needed / should be replaced / should be included with the rack? Anyone have any idea of costs?

What were the steering issues your wife noticed?

Not entirely sure, but certainly some stiffness and noise / clunking.

If the gaiter on the rack was split water would get in there together with road crud and form a very effective grinding paste so it would not surprise me if the rack was knackered if this had been going on for a while.

Personally I would not fit a second hand rack unless I knew it's providence - too risky. On the other hand nor would I pay LR prices for a new one. I would take the rack out and assess the damage. If it was the track rod bearing that was worn I would merely replace it and fit new gaiters, if the internal rack bearings were screwed I would look around for a rebuilt rack from a reputable name (GKN etc.).

Some of the early models suffered from problems with the steering rack, in particular some welding that was not up to standard. A full repair involved new rack, power steering pump filter and reservoir. Cost was about £700 if done by a main dealer although mine was done under warranty.

You can still purchase a rack, resivour and oils from landrover then fit them your self or a local garage as this would be cheaper than LR doing it.
Theres two two chose from, either a remanufactured one or brand new. There would of course be a deposite needed from a specialist as they want to rebuild your old one.

Hi - thanks guys.

Do LR do the re-manufactured, or someone else? If someone else, does anyone know who does them / what the cost is? Are they all the same, or has this component changed?

Thanks
