Not sure what Defender owners would say about that. They have been seen pulling artics in the snow without any fuss LL.B (Hons) - University of Derby

My clutch went in my defender but it was the main release bearing fooked it! And the old clutches in older land rovers were always solid!! Many do 200k with ease and no new clutch! Non of this modern European crap

2009 Freelander 2 TD4 GS Manual Zermatt Silver

The last two Defenders I've had an M reg 1994 300 Tdi
and a 51 reg 2001 Td5 both 90 CSW have had very
weak clutches....

As I said, I've never had or known a Land Rover with
a decent clutch.

I wish that when we got the Freelander I'd not been so
tight and got an auto.

I've made that mistake too many times now, never again.

200tdi was solid, and the td5 was even better and the tdci was just as good! You clearly had Friday cars!

Can't say about the 200Tdi's, never had one...

I did have an D reg 1987, good clutch but wow
was it gutless Laughing

We also had a FL1 TD4, I had that back to the dealer
more times and all's I got back was it's within acceptable
standards, hell was that clutch and gear box bad.

Let's get back on track...

Yes Freelander 2 Clutches are crap.

Buy any Freelander 2, it a very good
motor, just make sure it's an automatic.

Trust me...... Thumbs Up

OK a lot to digest.

I would love an SD4 but the purchase price and the fuel economy put me off ... also not that keen on automatics. IF they did a manual SD4 then I would find the extra cash.

'Herself' has decided she likes the Volvo XC60!

Maybe i'll just stick with my vRS!

At the risk of this turning sour....

If you plan on towing buy auto for ease of use. Other than that IainM1970 buy manual. There have been a number of people on here who have reported no problems with the manual and they have done lots of towing. It could depend on the experience of the driver as to how the clutch will fare.

Interesting comment you make about the SD4. LR would just need to make a stronger clutch and flywheel etc to deal with the extra power. Something which they have gone for with the Evoque. LL.B (Hons) - University of Derby

Iain,

What about a Octavia Scout ???

I've a mate that has a new one and
he loves it.

I must say, it's very nice. It's got
a heldex four wheel drive system
type thing, it's quite quick ( not to
vRS standards ) and tis good on fuel.

Sold I'll have two.....

2010 Freelander 2 TD4_e S Manual Stornoway Grey

Skoda Yeti, as Jeremy Clarkson proved on Top Gear, it is the best car in the world. Did think about one before we bought the FL2. The high end ones are very nice inside and are definitely well put together.

Good point Iain. Also, I have no doubt that the Yeti is good in snow but there is no compact 4x4, including the vastly improved BMW X3 that gives you peace of mind like the FL2 in winter. If you really have to venture out into the heavy snow and blizzards (all things equal on the tyre front i.e normal all weather tyres), there will always be a doubt in your mind with the rivals. The FL2 brings absolute confidence (when driven sensibly of course) in the snow that simply cannot be matched. LL.B (Hons) - University of Derby

If they did it with the 170 engine I would, though my dealer has been waiting for 11 months for one customers Scout to arrive!
